Category in Configuration settings

Hiho HappyDog, have you thought about adding a category to all these files? Would be nice for further usage. You can look up Category:Fundamental and create a new one, perhaps Category:MediaWiki foo.

Ahhh, fast communication ;-) Well, do what you like, you probably better know than I do, what is best fitting. A "MediaWiki" prefix on any category in MediaWiki.org is redundant and makes the category name more complicated than it should be. The site is about nothing but MediaWiki already. Particularly top level navigational labels, such as Category:Manual and category Category:Help, should be well chosen short labels. For example, it would be easy for people to type Category:MediaWiki Manual incorrectly as Category:Mediawiki Manual, Category:Mediawiki manual, Category:WikiMedia Manual, Category:Wikimedia Manual and Category:Wikimedia manual and people will. So simply, clearly and unbreakably Category:Manual will work better for the large and varied community this site enjoys. Simplicity doesn't break as easily -- Category:Manual, Category:manual, category:manual, category:Manual all just work. I don't have the power to arbitrate this but I feel it is important that this kind of robust simplicity be part of Mediawiki.org's labeling and navigational structure. Help ...

To be honest, I'm not sure! I know the original version had "SMTP Server", but I don't know if the original version is correct, as it came from the page on meta. These are not the default settings, just an example, so I have no way of checking (it is not something I am familiar with). I've filled it with the default values from Mail::factory() (linked to on the page), which may or may not be the correct thing to do! --HappyDog 06:00, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Interested in MedaiWiki Parser

Hi! I am intersted to parsing MedaiWiki in Java (see last entry on [2]). I have found your page [3], is MediaWiki still working so strange? Would the MediaWiki syntax be so (like different tags for <nowiki>) for ever? I don't know if i am here on the right plase to ask thes questions, sorry if i am wrong. Hi Peter. The MediaWiki parser is indeed a strange beast, and unfortunately it is unlikely to change radically in the near future - or at least Brion (the lead developer) is adamant that any changes will retain backwards compatibility. There is a move to try and document the parser at Markup spec, which you may find useful. In the meantime you might want to try asking on the MediaWiki irc channel, or perhaps post your question in a more public place, such as Project:Support desk. --HappyDog 23:49, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

mirroring help files

I thought it might be useful to post my experimental help file mirroring script, so it's at User:Sanbeg/mirrorhelp.py. It amy be useful for some context, since it illustrates workaround for some of the shortcoming in the help project. How to help with PD help?

I have some experience writing php code and needed some help content for a wiki I am putting together, so got directed here. Is there someone heading up the project that I should talk to?

I am not sure what you mean. This wiki is about the MediaWiki software. If you need help with PHP you should contact a dedicated PHP forum or mailing list. If, on the other hand, you ARE looking for help about the MediaWiki software then you have come to the right place. Gah.... Sorry... was trying to write on the the way out the door. Actually, I am looking to help. I was looking for some help content for my wiki and got directed to PD Help for some source, but it looks like there is still some work to be done in getting the exports to work (or I cannot find them.) So I was offering to help, but don't know who is heading up the PD Help work. Any ideas?

No probs :) - There is nobody in charge of the PD help page project, just a bunch of volunteers who do what they have the time and inclination to do. I am in as good a position as any to answer any questions you might have, so feel free to ask. The export process is being worked out at automating help page export, but is not yet live. I think we probably need a bit more content before exports will be useful, and in the meantime both the content creation and export process are moving (slowly) along in tandem. Branch/release level

Hi Rob,

You modified Template:MW quick download and replaced {{MW stable release number}} with the hard-coded string 1.8. I understand your reasons for doing this - the upgrade is for the branch, not the individual release. However it now means that this is another page that needs updating whenever a new release comes out.

I don't see the problem with listing a point release here. If someone is upgrading to 1.8, they should always upgrade to the latest 1.8.x, so the text makes sense. The link itself always goes to the most recent upgrade page, so they click on the 1.8.2 link and go to Manual:Upgrading to 1.8, which is what they want. Do you object strongly to my changing it back?

Import

Hi, I've been tagging applicable pages that I've come across on Meta to be moved here. But, glancing at the import log over here, there has been almost no activity. Any administrator may now import pages from Meta; do you know if there are any plans to do so? Is there any use in tagging the pages on Meta to be moved? Thanks. Hi Dmcdevit. The transwiki functionality has only just been enabled, so you're right there has not been much activity yet. Personally, I am waiting for the 'Extension' namespace to be created so that we can organise things a bit better before receiving a bunch of new stuff, but other admins may step up to the bat a bit sooner. Once that namespace is in place I will start transferring items - hopefully that will happen fairly soon (there is an open bug for it). --HappyDog 15:26, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

Copying Help Help Page

So where should it go if not in help? I spent a good deal of time on the page itself Help:Copying, making sure it didn't break things, that the steps were simple enough for even the 14 year old installing his/her first wiki. OK - I see what you've done here, and it makes sense to add that to the help pages. I was expecting a MW.org specific set of instructions, as we are working (very slowly) towards a centralised solution (see automating help page export). Of course, those kind of instructions would be inappropriate to be included within the help docs themselves, but your approach is absolutely fine, and incredibly useful as an interim measure (and I expect that interim to be quite long...). feature request, hacks, etc

is there a page for them? Where should I put them. With ISO 8601 I am happy. But where to put other things. E.g. if SkipSkins is activated after some users already selected a then skipped skin, one needs to code around it. Where to put this? First as a hack, later as something that could becaome a feature request, or maybe the hack is good enough to be integrated in SVN. Tobias Conradi 20:29, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

  • Feature requests - Bugzilla.
  • Hacks - no fixed place yet. They are lightly discouraged as they are generally tied to a small set of software versions, are not widely tested or portable and may cause unanticipated problems. Hacks that may be genuinely useful to a number of users should go on either (a) the talk page of the related issue (e.g. if it is an installation hack you might want to put it at Talk:Installation), (b) on the talk page of the related configuration setting (e.g. a hack dealing with compressed revisions might be appropriate at Manual talk:$wgCompressRevisions) or (c) on a new page discussing the issue and offering a workaround - however it is only worth doing this if the hack is presented with full context in a way that would be useful to someone experiencing the same problem. In your example Manual talk:$wgSkipSkins seems appropriate.
  • Fixes/patches - submit to Bugzilla for review.

Adding a notice on new page creation page

Hello there. :)

Could we add something like what they have on Meta when you try to create a new page? The default text is "You've followed a link to a page that doesn't exist yet. To create the page, start typing in the box below (see the help page for more info)." but on Meta they've added a box that you cannot pass without reading. Could this be added on MediaWiki too? And do we have that multilingual function (can't remember the correct name, just check my user page on Meta to see what I mean) on MW? That same message could be translated on as many as possible languages. At least spamming users couldn't say that they didn't see a notice!

And is the procect to transfer MediaWiki content from Meta stopped 'cause of attribution problems? I just think that it's funny that I find the info about MediaWiki I need on Meta, not on MediaWiki.org.

Hi Sayuri. We already have a notice (see MediaWiki:newarticletext). Or did you mean that this isn't good enough? Suggestions are welcome - please comment on the talk page.
Regarding the transfer of content, I personally have stopped any importing due to the attribution problem, on the grounds that single-user sign-on is "just around the corner". Hopefully it won't be long now... --HappyDog 01:07, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

Project:Categories

Hey Happy Dog,

I see that you've decided to reorganise from scratch the category tree. Before you go ahead too rapidly in this process, have you seen my suggestion about including a default root category directly in the MediaWiki sidebar?

The idea is basically that by adopting a standard designation for the root category, it could in turn be included directly in the MediaWiki release and added to the localisation files for proper translation in the sidebar.

Whatever is decided, don't hesitate to drop me a line if you need help for specific tasks in the categorisation process. I usually drop by the Special:Uncategorizedcategories and the Special:Wantedcategories for my contribution to this website but the Project:Categories has just been added to my list : )

After removing of template "Template:MediaWiki Welcome, possibly, should be removed all other child templates - /de, /es, /fr, /ja, /ru ?

A question concerning your extension

Hello, your work seems interesting and could possibly be helpful on my page.

Is there a way to somehow alias Infobox -> data. What I mean is I have lots of pages in category and each page has a Infobox. I want to add all of these into table and I don't want to go manually through all the pages. Any solutions?
