VisualEditor In Korean Wikipedia[edit]

Hello, I saw your message from 사랑방. Many korean wikipedia editor disagree visualeditor in korean wikipedia until the bug - it eats korean syllables without last syllable - is solved. You can find this bug Here. Korean wikipedians' opinion is postpone the deployment in Korean wikipedia and other korean wikimedia projects. Thanks. Hello, Revi. I'm in discussion about this, and will reply as soon as I have an answer. Thanks, PEarley (WMF) (talk) 15:39, 12 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Re:Thank you (from wp.id)[edit]

You're welcome. :)  Ę-oиė  >>> 16:19, 13 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hey Iwan! If you want to do more English-->Indonesian translating help for VE, this is the place: VisualEditor/TranslationCentral. Thanks for your work! PEarley (WMF) (talk) 16:21, 13 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thank's to the information. Btw, can you inform me if any update VE on translate.net? Coz it's so fast.. :) Thanks in advance,  Ę-oиė  >>> 16:29, 13 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I will. I'm just getting to know translatewiki.net myself. Is it not updating your work onto the id.wiki version? PEarley (WMF) (talk) 16:53, 13 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Oh no, it's updated correctly. But the change (update) to VE on that .net is so fast, I can not track it everytime. :)  Ę-oиė  >>> 13:17, 14 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

About TemplateData[edit]

Are we gonna manually add that to all template at wiki? On the documentation subpage, right?  Ę-oиė  >>> 04:24, 15 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately, yes. It's very quick for small templates, slower for ones with lots of parameters. Someone is working on a script to do all the required parameters automatically. I'll let you know when that is running. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 16:47, 15 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Glad to hear has a script to do that. I'll be waiting. Thanks in advance,  Ę-oиė  >>> 18:23, 16 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
It's up on French Wikipedia ([1]), but no luck getting it to work outside of there yet. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 19:30, 16 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Iwan, okay, we have a working version on English - let me know if it works over on in.wiki. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 17:16, 21 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

VisualEditor in Hungarian Wikipedia[edit]

Hello,

I already started to translate VisualEditor's texts into Hungarian, however I do not see them in the lists. Can you insert Hungarian there? --Misibacsi (talk) 04:40, 19 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Misibacsi, thanks for translating! Where are your translated documents located? PEarley (WMF) (talk) 17:23, 21 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello,

They are at translatewiki.net ! Not 5% translated, but many more. --Misibacsi (talk) 19:09, 1 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

VisualEditor in Azerbaijani Wikipedia[edit]

Hi PEarley. Where can I translate terms of VisualEditor in Azerbaijani Wikipedia: "Edit source", "Bold", "Italic", "Reference" etc.? They are still in English but should be in Azerbaijani. --Interfase (talk) 09:35, 26 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hey Interfase, this can be done through Translatewiki.net. Shouldn't be too time consuming, although there may be some terms difficult to translate into Azerbaijani? Let me know if you have problems. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 14:56, 26 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I've sent a request and now waiting for translator rights. --Interfase (talk) 20:52, 26 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Good stuff. It should happen pretty quick. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 21:02, 26 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

General VisualEditor translate questions[edit]

Hi PEarley! While all text messages of the Greek VE user guide have been translated (most screenshots are still untouched), I am encountering this kind of stuff: {{int:visualeditor-ca-editsource-section}} that leads to English text in the user guide. I could not locate and translate it (Translatewiki.net? my request for editing permission there is pending).

Transalting rights for VE interface granted. But I still don't know what to do with such a kind of parameters. I am leaving it to more knowledgeable wiki users.--Dipa1965 (talk) 12:49, 28 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
You don't have translate that stuff (anything with {{int:bla..bla..bla}}) because it refer to Internationalization on Translatewiki.net. See these.  Ę-oиė  >>> 04:53, 29 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Iwan is right, you can ignore the int: stuff. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 00:12, 30 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Another question is how can we fix the following: when a non-english user clicks the VE help button ("?"), then clicks the "Read the user guide" link, the English version of the guide is displayed. In order to display the user guide in his local language, he must search among the many language links and click the correct one, at the top of the page. The local language should be the default. Best regards.--Dipa1965 (talk) 07:01, 28 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I will look into this problem, Dipa. My understanding was that it should go directly to version of the wiki you are on, but if this is not the case, it should be. Will ask the developers about this. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 00:12, 30 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
This problem is being tracked in this report: Bug 51797. We are discussing fixes for this. Right now, the version is based on each editor's language selection on MediaWiki, which is not good. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 00:31, 30 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Btw, I performed some VE interface translation changes. However they now need a reviewer. These are quite important for 2 reasons: a) until now a large number of items was not translated, b) the 10 missing screenshots in the user guide (for now they are substituted by the their english counterparts) cannot be created since the related screens contain the old (english) items. After uploading these 10 screenshots, the VE user guide will be 100% completed. I will post a request in the el-wiki forum and wait to see what happens.--Dipa1965 (talk) 12:49, 28 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Dipa1965, I will get answers for these questions as soon as possible, maybe tomorrow morning. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 17:41, 28 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Dipa, thanks for making the post and co-ordinating this. It is great to have your help with el-wiki. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 00:12, 30 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Moving VE screenshots from MediaWiki to Commons[edit]

Hello PEarly! I don't know how to ask for that. Is there a specific template I could put on all these files? Best regards.--Dipa1965 (talk) 17:32, 4 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yes Done
All files has been moved to Commons. To the sysop, please delete all this files on mw. On the future, please upload all your files to Commons, not on this site. Thanks,  Ę-oиė  >>> 10:50, 5 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yay, I get to use my new admins powerz! Thanks both, PEarley (WMF) (talk) 19:08, 5 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
... Congratulation for your new power :)  Ę-oиė  >>> 13:26, 6 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ah, power. Now I just need an evil translator vandal to show up so I can use my block button! (Thanks for moving that page for me, working late ...) PEarley (WMF) (talk) 18:12, 6 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Congratulations. May the Power be with you :) --Dipa1965 (talk) 18:38, 10 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Re:[edit]

Sorry, but I have busy weekend and I can't do translation work for lv.wikipedia. Maybe ask in our community portal (https://lv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vikip%C4%93dija:Kopienas_port%C4%81ls)?--DJ EV (talk) 07:58, 14 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

No problem, and thanks for the suggestion, DJ. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 16:02, 14 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Not existing menu[edit]

Hello PEarley! Is it only me or I am seeing a serious error in VisualEditor User Guide (all languages)? A "More" pull-down menu is mentioned there (with associated screenshots) but I don't see it anywhere in the current VisualEditor toolbar. There exists an "Insert" menu in the current VE but it is only similar (not identical) to the "More" menu (e.g. there are no "Reference" and "Media" icons). Do all these reflect an upcoming change to the toolbar structure or a leftover from previous version?--Dipa1965 (talk) 22:11, 29 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Dipa, Happy New Year! It is not just you, the User Guide is behind the times. We are waiting to update it until January, as we are changing it again! There will be a new button for references. Unfortunately for translations, we have been playing around with the names of menus, and the items in them. I'm sorry if this is frustrating, but we are trying to find the best layout for everyone. I can message you in the middle of the month when we have updated the User Guide to a more permanent version. Hope you are well, I notice there are quite a few VE edits at el.wikipedia. Do you think the Greek editing community is happy with VisualEditor? PEarley (WMF) (talk) 19:59, 30 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hello and Happy New Year for you too! Thank you for explaining. Wrt the popularity of VE in el-wp, it seems that it is indeed not very well-regarded among the experienced users (their response to the VE announcement was lukewarm at best), including admins. I think that, for the average user, the main reason is speed. For advanced users, add into account the issues (rejection of edits, unexpected results) when handling wiki code and templates. Plus it is not needed when adding or removing categories. To be honest, I also use wiki source editor in these cases. I use VE mainly when adding considerable amount of text to an article or when copy-editing. I do not use VE, for instance, when I want need to add or modify reference warning templates. An example of unexpected behaviour is this one from me. See how many "span class" tags were added (reminding me, a bit, the miserable html code output of MS Word).
In any case, I 'm not considering myself a luddist :) so I am optimistic about VE: code handling issues will eventually be ironed out and speed will improve. I hate wiki source environment so I think it is a matter of time for it to be phased out for all but the most demanding cases.
--Dipa1965 (talk) 22:20, 30 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your insight here, it reflects the reaction from many experienced users. I too find certain tasks unpleasant with VE in my own editing, and use wikitext for those (for me they include adding new references and editing complex info- and navboxes). Happily, improvements to ref editing are coming soon. But it is understandable that if VE can't do something an experienced editor does regularly, they aren't going to be too excited about the whole platform. Also happily, editors like yourself understand that it is a work in progress, and will keep getting better with every code update. Speed improvements will continue, which is important for wikis with big articles. But it may be a year or more before VE is the superior editor for all tasks that we do.
I'm going to find a bug report for that span class issue as well ... Thanks for your engagement with VE, Dipa. It makes our work more pleasant and informed. PEarley (WMF) (talk) 01:16, 2 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)
