New Feature for the Visual Editor

The Editing Team would like to offer you all a new feature for the VisualEditor.

The feature is called Edit Check and it will prompt newcomers to add an inline citation before publishing new information to an article.

You're welcome to try out the feature now using a URL parameter. You can find testing instructions below.

We are curious to know: do you notice anything about the feature that causes you to be concerned about it being made available to newcomers at INSERT WIKI NAME?

Testing instructions

To try Edit Check at INSERT WIKI NAME:

  1. Edit any article in the main namespace using the VisualEditor
  2. Add &ecenable=1 to the URL in your browser. E.g. https://ha.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dafa-duka&veaction=edit&ecenable=1.
  3. Create a new paragraph, that is at least 50 characters long without a citation
  4. Press the INSERT LOCAL NAME OF PUBLISH BUTTON
  5. Notice the  INSERT LOCAL NAME OF "ADD A CITATION" prompt that appears
  6. ✅

== New Feature for the Visual Editor ==

The Editing Team is building a new feature for the visual editor. It is called Edit Check.

Edit Check is designed to encourage newcomers to add inline citations. The project has also been designed to benefit projects as a whole by increasing the likelihood that newcomers add citations before publishing new information to an article.

Question: Could you all try the initial version of the feature and share what you think? Testing instructions are below.

Why are we building this?

At the moment, anyone not aware of "please cite your sources" can edit an article and add facts with no citations. When this happens, the people who make these edits often become disappointed when they discover the changes they made were reverted. Experienced volunteers on the other hand grow frustrated by needing to continually revert low-quality edits and post messages on inexperienced volunteers' talk pages that often go unnoticed.

We are focusing our work on adding citations for now, but we can imagine many different types of prompts in the future!

Testing instructions

We offer your community the possibility to test the feature and to provide initial feedback.

Edit check is only activated if you follow the instructions written below; the feature is not visible for newcomers.

To try Edit Check at INSERT WIKI NAME:

  1. Edit any article in the main namespace using the VisualEditor.
    • The feature is only available for articles.
  2. Add &ecenable=1 to the URL in your browser.
    • Example: https://ar.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%D8%B5%D9%8A%D9%81&action=edit&section=1&ecenable=1
  3. Reload the page with the new URL.
  4. Create a new paragraph, that is at least 50 characters long without adding a citation
  5. Press the INSERT LOCAL NAME OF PUBLISH BUTTON
  6. Notice the INSERT LOCAL NAME OF "ADD A CITATION" prompt that appears
  7. ✅ Test is completed.
    • Don't save your edit unless you know what you are doing!

A place to document what I'm noticing while using ChatGPT that is related to the Movement/Wikipedia...

Observations[edit]

  1. I wonder if/how the ChatGPT plugin could be improved to such that questions which cannot be answered using Wikipedia's existing "views" (read: articles) could be translated to queries that are passed to WDQS and seamlessly returned to me in ChatGPT.
  2. I feel inspired by the prospect of being able to use ChatGPT to help me "compose" answers to questions that: A) feel personally relevant to me and B) the interface does not currently make it easy for me to answer
    • Context/example: to help me develop a "richer" sense for the place I grew up in, I was curious to see the notable events that happened within a 25-mile radius of the time I grew up in. Unfortunately, the information needed to answer this question does not already exist within a view on Wikipedia. As such, the Wikipedia ChatGPT plug-in doesn't seem to be able to answer it. [1]
