This the new Wikimedia language engineering monthly report. It continues the tradition of the monthly report published by the Wikimedia Language team which is discontinued in favour of Global Collaboration monthly report. This report is currently looking for a new location.

August 2017 Wikimedia language engineering monthly report for September 2017 October 2017

Monthly updates about changes to internationalization and translation and other language support features. Names of people assumed to contribute as volunteers are in bold text.


  • Lots of usability and design improvements to the Content Translation dashboard.
  • There is now a way to link directly to a particular message in Special:Translate.
  • Language codes can now be formatted according to BCP47 standard with a new JavaScript function.

Wikimedia's software is translated to hundreds of languages using the Translate extension for MediaWiki. In addition it is used to translate help pages, newsletters, policies, announcements, banners, etc. It is installed on Wikimedia special projects, and many other sites. Translate is part of MLEB.

  • User Fomafix removed some deprecated code in translation editor.
  • Bartosz Dziewoński fixed the positioning of the "Mark as reviewed" tooltip. T162101
  • Volker Eckl replaced close icon in the translation editor with a standard version. T50067
  • Niklas Laxström added a way to link directly to a specific message in Special:Translate.
  • Petar Petkovic fixed a minor style issue in the language list on translatable pages. T176141

Universal Language Selector[edit]

Universal Language Selector provides language selector, list of suggested languages, input methods and web fonts. It is part of MLEB.

About 10 patches were merged this month.

  • Volker Eckl updated colors and styling to match WikimediaUI. T174237, T175295
  • Niklas Laxström updated jquery.uls from upstream.
  • Amir Aharoni split translatable API messages into a separate group.
  • User Fomafix removed code that was supporting MediaWiki versions no longer supported by this extension.

MediaWiki Language Extension Bundle[edit]

No MLEB release this month. Current stable release is 2017.07. Next release is planned for 2017.10.

MediaWiki core internationalization[edit]

Changes to translations and equivalent localisation data (magic words, namespace names) are not included in this list. The volunteer translators are updating translations every day to keep up with changes.

  • Niklas Laxström made BCP47 language code formatter for JavaScript code.
  • Thanks to Kunal Mehta the deprecated global $wgLang is no longer used in EditPage.
  • User Chiefwei updated Chinese language conversion data.
  • User Fomafix applied the new BCP47 language code formatter on edit preview.
  • User Fomafix added missing escaping to pipe-separator in skin code.
  • Brad Jorsch expanded documentation for IApiMessage.
  • Timo Tijhof removed deprecated MessageBlobStore::insertMessageBlob.

Project Milkshake consists of four re-usable jquery internationalization libraries.
