Monthly updates about changes to internationalization and translation and other language support features. Names of people assumed to contribute as volunteers are in bold text.

Highlights[edit]

Language database is now an independent project to make reuse easier. It used to be part of jquery.uls library. It contains over 500 entries detailing basic information about languages, such as their autonym, their writing script, and region(s) of the world where they are spoken.

August was, so far, the most active month of 2017 for translatewiki.net with the highest number of translation updates (55k) and translation reviews (15k) by over 350 translators.

Content Translation[edit]

Translate[edit]

Wikimedia's software is translated to hundreds of languages using the Translate extension for MediaWiki. In addition it is used to translate help pages, newsletters, policies, announcements, banners, etc. It is installed on Wikimedia special projects, translatewiki.net and many other sites. Translate is part of MLEB.

Universal Language Selector[edit]

Universal Language Selector provides language selector, list of suggested languages, input methods and web fonts. It is part of MLEB.

  • Bartosz Dziewoński corrected the position of the ULS language change notification in skins where ULS is in a different side of the page.
  • User Isarra corrected the position of the ULS dialog in skins where ULS is in a different side of the page. T161586

MLEB[edit]

No MLEB was released this month. The latest release is 2017.07.

MediaWiki core internationalization[edit]

Changes to translations and equivalent localisation data (magic words, namespace names) are not included in this list. The volunteer translators are updating translations every day to keep up with changes.

  • User TTO split $wgDummyLanguageCodes configuration variable to more specific lists of deprecated, renamed or internal language codes.
  • User Fomafix corrected the autonym for Norwegian macro language (no).
  • User Fomafix added new utility function LanguageCode::replaceDeprecatedCodes for handling deprecated language codes.
  • Bartosz Dziewoński fixed Special:PageLanguage to show the current page language for a page. T74966
  • User Umherirrender added clear error messages when there are mistakes in the definition of magic words.
  • Amir Aharoni enabled the Atayal (tay) language as interface language after translators had reached the inclusion threshold for translation coverage. T173383
