Topic on Talk:Content translation

Hello, I've just tried to translate a few pages from English and various languages into French but it says that automatic translation is not available for French. Funny enough it works for related languages (e.g. Spanish) and less used related languages (e.g. Catalan).

Can anyone fix this/upload the French term dictionary? Many thanks

As far as I understand it, the translation engine uses Apertium as the engine behind the scene. And only released language pairs are usable. Currently the pairs are:

  • Breton -> French
  • French -> Esperanto
  • French <-> Catalan
  • French <-> Spanish

Sadly, the English <-> French pair is in early alpha stage...

Thanks @Halibutt for replying! We're working on French<->Spanish to be available in Content Translation very soon.

Apertium translates well from French to Esperanto, but we have to correct after.

@Ĉiuĵaŭde: I doubt any machine-assisted translation will ever be good enough for Wikipedia without editing the text manually in the end. It might be possible between closely-related languages (say, Spanish to Catalan or Serbian to Croatian), but between distant languages it will always need an editor. After all the computer will never know which of the synonyms to use. Consider the English noun ''house''. In a Polish-English dictionary it will have at least ten different Polish equivalents, and the computer will most likely never know for sure which of them to use. Understanding the context, the consituation is critical.

Having said that, some online dictionaries based on a large corpus of texts show some promise in countering this problem (Linguee.pl for instance), but still.
