Manual talk:Deciding whether to use a wiki as your website type

About this board

link to Wikimedia Foundation

This was corrupted by the 23:48, 13 November 2020 revision by Shirayuki. The text "Even the Wikimedia Foundation uses" previously led to the Wikimedia Foundation page over at meta but now it leads to a page explaining differences between mediawiki and wikimedia.

This is unexpected and therefore undesirable. However, there's to much strange translation stuff going on that I won't bother editing the page.

Hint: encapsulating each and every sentence fragment in translation tags is an unworkable piece of crap approach that I would give a full 9 out of 10 when it comes to user hostility. So congrats for that I guess, you've basically screwed the entire idea of user-editable wikipedia pages.

So you'll have to fix the link yourselves. CapnZapp (talk) 18:32, 30 December 2021 (UTC)

Wanted to add a disadvantage

But didn't manage. Here is my suggestion:

*'''<translate><!--T:50--> Wikis primarily handle text:</translate>''' <translate><!--T:51-->For managing data in a wiki, several different possibilities exist.</translate> <translate><!--T:52--> See [[Manual:Managing data in MediaWiki|Managing data in MediaWiki]]</translate> Don't know why this does not work...

Wargo (talkcontribs)

Do not add <!--T:XX-->. If still not working, don't add translation tags, they will be added by someone else.

I want to translate!

Hi. This manual looks ready. Could it be marked for translation? It would be especially important as it is linked from the homepage. I’ve put the minimal <translate> tags but you might want to place them more precisely.

Hi Shirayuki, thank you so much for having marked the page for translation. But why did you focus the translation effort on the headings? I want to translate the rest of the text too!

Also, it’s too bad you acted against my edit on Manual:Deciding which wiki software to use. I gave a reason for it in my edit summary: ‘Colons must be in the original text (because e.g. French needs a space before them).’ I think you should cancel your edit, then remark the page for translation, then the colons have to be added in the texts to translate.

Regards.

Thank you. I fixed the translations made obsolete by the colon move in all languages.

To me you don’t have to bother with so many translate tags, but never mind. Also it’s better with real names for the variables, such as $wmf for the ‘Wikimedia Foundation’ link and $manual-spam for ‘Manual:Combating spam’, so that it’s easier on the translation page to understand what the variables refer to (we can insert variable names directly with Alt-figure as keyboard shortcut). In any case, I was able to work.

Have a nice day!
