What's a campaign?

[edit]

The infobox description says "Provides features for campaign organizers and participants", but it's not 100% clear what a campaign is. Consider adding a word or two to make it more clear. –Novem Linguae (talk) 01:22, 30 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Also, examples of the features, e.g. "such as X, Y, and Z" might be good. –Novem Linguae (talk) 01:27, 30 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hello, @Novem Linguae! I'm the product manager for the Campaigns team that developed the tool. Great question, and apologies for any confusion! In this context, campaigns means events that summon people to contribute to the wikis. However, we are also broadly building tools that can be used for many event types, such as edit-a-thons, meetups, etc. For a more detailed explanation of the tool and how to use it, we recommend you check out our User Guide on Meta-Wiki. We will also look into how we can add more clarity to the documentation on Mediawiki.org. Thank you! IFried (WMF) (talk) 18:36, 30 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Internationalization please?

[edit]

Hello, @IFried (WMF), I am translating meta:group=page-Event+Center/Registration/ja, and it mentions to utilize this extension for events. I wonder if we could arrange and have this instruction page for multiple languages. Would you care to teak it for translation please? Already nudged the original writer for courtesy reason.

Both organizers and participants will benefit a lot, as the workflow is very handy. Esp, AFAIK attending Hubs meetings, I see passionate users with 1,000- edit counts venture to initiate events, which surely help expand outreach toward 2030. If organizing events lowers the hurdle with brilliant extensions, we'd better offer them in English and optimized to as much languages as we could. If translation is done/underway, Grants proposal will also be much easier, as an organizer is assured that the workflow holds strong backup by those well maintained extensions. wow.

Maybe I am dreaming too much? (: -- Omotecho (talk) 04:06, 1 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hey there, yes, the extension page should definitely be translatable! The reason why it's not already translatable is that it was mostly a WIP, since many things were still being changed. I think it's now stable enough that it could be translated. Daimona Eaytoy (talk) 19:12, 1 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Omotecho I just added translate tags to this page; thanks for pointing this out and for working on the translation of our user guide on Meta-Wiki! Also, I wanted to express gratitude and excitement regarding your second comment ("Both organizers and participants will benefit a lot..."). Our team hopes to make it easier to organize impactful events within the Wikimedia movement (whether it's for edit-a-thons, hub meetings, etc), and we completely agree that the tools & their documentation should be usable across the languages supported by the wikis. Thank you again! IFried (WMF) (talk) 15:53, 5 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Screenshots

[edit]

Hello friends. Consider adding some screenshots to Extension:CampaignEvents and/or Help:Extension:CampaignEvents to help folks visualize what this extension is and does without having to install it. It may help communities make a decision about whether or not they want to opt in. Thanks. –Novem Linguae (talk) 00:10, 2 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Novem Linguae, thanks for this suggestion! This has made us think that we can probably update a few documentation pages with some updated screenshots, which we'll look into getting up very soon. Thanks again! IFried (WMF) (talk) 17:39, 7 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Novem Linguae, hello! I am just sending a quick update that we have added some screenshots to Help:Extension:CampaignEvents. As for Extension:CampaignEvents, we didn't see screenshots added as often to the extension documentation pages, so we didn't do that. Thank you again for bringing this to our attention! Maybe for Wikimania 2026

[edit]

This extension seems lovely, also to abandon Eventbrite (which is proprietary software).

Could the Connection team host a small meeting with the communication/Wikimania team, so to abandon Eventbrite in the future and adopt this extension instead?

That would be pretty much in line with the FAQs against Eventbrite in m:Wikimedians_for_software_freedom#Eventbrite :)

Thanks for your help Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 15:34, 28 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Adding a kind ping to @IFried (WMF): - what do you think about this opportunity? Thanks :) Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 15:50, 28 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for this comment and for your support of the extension, @Valerio Bozzolan! We're definitely interested in more people using the extension tools for all sorts of groups/events for Wikimedia volunteers. We have already enabled the extension on the Wikimania wiki, so we hope some people will experiment with using it for various meetups and events at Wikimania 2025. Meanwhile, Eventyay is being used as the main programming software for Wikimania 2025, which is listed as a viable alternative under https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedians_for_software_freedom#Eventbrite. With that being said, it is a great question to wonder what role the extension tools can play for Wikimania 2026. We do not know yet, but we're happy to think about it with conference planners, both during this year's conference and then in the planning stages for next year's conference. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, and we'll think about this as a team! IFried (WMF) (talk) 18:35, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
