Please assign image caption for translation: "Help:New Filters For Edit Review/Live Updates"

[edit]

Trizek (WMF) For the image caption and blacket issue you reverted my edit, my intention was to make it a translation source. Would you please assign that caption for translation? ----Omotecho (talk) 09:40, 6 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Never mind, it works as is! ;) ----Omotecho (talk) 09:42, 6 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
You certainly have a good reason to suggest that change, I'm just not understanding it! :D
Add the brackets inside of the translation unit would have result in the following source:
Location of the two options in the toolbar.]]
SO people whould have had to add or keep the ]], which is a bit confusing. That's why the brackets are outside and you don't need to worry about them for a perfect result.
Thank you for that translation by the way! Is it related to T195993?
Trizek (WMF) (talk) 09:59, 6 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Yes, thanks for TechNews as always, #23 inspired me to sort and found ”Help:New Filters For Edit Review” needs some sentences translated into ja (myself beginning to use that function more)  :)
Well, back to the subject here, if I remember correctly, the bracket situation was confusing;
  1. when I sorted the caption "Location of the two options in the toolbar." in the older version, I thought it was not accessible, and
  2. I supposed that caption was not assigned for translation, and edited the /en file by moving end_translate code after square brackets.
  3. Then from the surface, the caption appeared as translation source, which I put into ja.
The only unclear part is that why the _/translate_ code inside the brackets did not show the caption in translation extension window ... ----Omotecho (talk) 11:48, 6 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Talk pages consultation in Japanese language?

[edit]

Hello!

Thank you for your translation of the talk pages consultation announcement in Japanese! Do you plan to host that consultation on Japanese Wikipedia? That would be great!

Tell me if I can help, Trizek (WMF) (talk) 15:15, 25 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Trizek (WMF): Thank you so much to bring this great consultation chance across Wikimedia Talk pages! As it's the semester-end here for colleges and institutions, I stand by for hosts jumping in: always happy to extend ideas to your team with some ja-en support. cheers. --Omotecho (talk) 15:54, 25 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Translating project pages

[edit]

Hello, Omotecho. I saw your note at Topic:Vkb278lfz4sq7n4y about marking the Talk pages project for updates.

Usually, I don't recommend marking all of a project page for translation. Translators' time is extremely valuable, and I don't want to ask you to translate things that might change, or that don't seem important.

That said, whatever you and User:Shirayuki want to translate is okay with me. You can mark as much – or as little – of that page for translation as you want. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 23:10, 12 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello Omotecho

I'm doing a follow up about this idea. I'm curious to know what would be the benefit of having this page being translated. :)

[WMF Board of Trustees - Call for feedback: Community Board seats] Meetings with MediaWiki and Wikitech communities

[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees is organizing a call for feedback about community selection processes between February 1 and March 14. While the Wikimedia Foundation and the movement have grown about five times in the past ten years, the Board’s structure and processes have remained basically the same. As the Board is designed today, we have a problem of capacity, performance, and lack of representation of the movement’s diversity. Our current processes to select individual volunteer and affiliate seats have some limitations. Direct elections tend to favor candidates from the leading language communities, regardless of how relevant their skills and experience might be in serving as a Board member, or contributing to the ability of the Board to perform its specific responsibilities. It is also a fact that the current processes have favored volunteers from North America and Western Europe. In the upcoming months, we need to renew three community seats and appoint three more community members in the new seats. This call for feedback is to see what processes can we all collaboratively design to promote and choose candidates that represent our movement and are prepared with the experience, skills, and insight to perform as trustees?

In this regard, two rounds of feedback meetings are being hosted to collect feedback from the technical communities in Wikimedia. Two rounds are being hosted with the same agenda, to accomodate people from various time zones across the globe. We will be discussing ideas proposed by the Board and the community to address the above mentioned problems. Please sign-up according to whatever is most comfortable to you. You are welcome to participate in both as well!

Also, please share this with other volunteers who might be interested in this. Let me know if you have any questions. KCVelaga (WMF), 14:38, 21 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Translation

[edit]

Hello! Would you be able to translate this message about the Desktop Improvements? I will post it on Wikipedia in Japanese. I'd like to do that within 3-4 days.

As you can see, at the bottom, there's an invitation to an online meeting which will be taking place on Friday at 16:00 UTC. We know people in Japan sleep at that hour. I won't publish this part on Wikipedia in Japanese. Instead, we will see how many (America/Africa/Europe-based) people participate and if there's a lot, then we'll organize next office hours at a Eastern Asia-friendly time.

Thank you! SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 23:32, 1 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi, am working on your request, and please update a repeated phrase and push for update.
For video meeting hours and announcement: Better to excuse ourselves if the time setting would be inconvenient for many, but to not to announce at all: allow me to point out that we have a risk to ill-message, or readers’ mindset that half of the globe is our target but the other aren’t.
IMHO, 25-26 hrs is still a "young" hour in jawiki community, esp in Tokyo under semi-curfew: have a look at Recent Changes and so many including myself are onwiki. Cheers, and please take care, -- Omotecho (talk) 05:26, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hey, what do you think, how would the Japanese Wikipedia community react if we asked for jawiki to have Desktop Improvements as default? I've prepared a message to be translated. Feel invited for translation only if you think they might agree now :) SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 21:41, 10 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yes Done Hi, I've marked Wikimedia Apps/Team/iOS/Notifications for translation now. Thank you for being interested in making it available in Japanese. (: /Johan (WMF) (talk) 10:46, 3 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Wonderful, as learning to edit/translate on iOS, it’s a new horizon for a converted Android user, for a decade (me). Sensing my flock of generation would enjoy Wikipedia app with pings exchanged among users. Maybe you won’t be bothered to check both your incoming mailbox and userpage as much as before. Omotecho (talk) 17:29, 3 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I hope this can be really useful for me as my normal, non-WMF Wikimedia editor self. I have some dreams for what this could do that I keep pushing, but there's always so many more things we'd like to do than we have the capacity to build. /Johan (WMF) (talk) 17:39, 4 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Well, let me say your team has been lowering the “gate”, or barrier they say, for retirees who needs a fruitful way to spend their earned hobby hours: in my area, it’s very hard to stay away from SNS or gossip filled realm where you consume your self esteem.
My dream is: if people discover Wikipedia app on their iOS devices and pick up pages they are interested in, they might find vacuum area where their treasure trove of knowledge and supervision, which they have honed during their professional life, be appreciated as contribution/editing/writing.
Filling the gap of knowledge seems endless to me, and you are so relieved you have 20 yrs without boredom, being intelligent, and not resort to be an outcast in the digital world. Expecting two decades after your retirement with nothing to learn or teach would be the worst nightmare you would live - anywhere in the universe…
And Wikipedia has introduced landing pages welcoming new comers, you can start any day and choose if you go adding pictures or links, or venture to add citations your professional days urged you to tackle at. In full circle, you find those boring books are finally of use (;
I wish my late parents could witness what WMF is at, and they could have kept me so busy tutoring which button to push and finish their edits… that way, I could have thanked them enough to teach me read and appreciate other people’s idea of the world. -- Omotecho (talk) 18:06, 4 October 2021 (UTC) correction. An important translation is coming

Hello! I'm writing to you to let you know that we in the Product department are working on an important announcement. This is about Apple's iCloud Private Relay and blocking good-faith editors. The Japanese community may be one of the most severely impacted. Here you will learn more details.

I'll reach out to you again when the announcement is ready to be translated. I would be most grateful if you considered the translation and promotion of this as a priority for the next week. Thank you! SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 17:13, 7 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello, there's another page - it's partly done already. Would you be able to translate this? SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 20:03, 24 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hi, @SGrabarczuk (WMF), done, and sorry the date/time notation looks quite silly as 27 1月 (木曜日)15:00 UTC. The meta:Tech News/ja applies a trick to show dates in ja naturally, and maybe we have checked/talked about that trick already?
  • It needs to appear as 1月27日 (木曜日) 15:00 UTC.
  • Negotiable if it shows 271月—, with "日" as a suffix (like 1st-2nd-3rd-4th but univesal), tho gramatically it still is not correct, but intuitive enough to tell the date.
Feels great that you have completed 70%+ of the segments, and such helping to minimize the task is very special. d(^o^)b Dōmo arigatō,it means a lot. Cheers, Omotecho (talk) 00:02, 25 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hello, how are you? Would you be able to finish translating this announcement? It's 38% done already. I'd like to send it this week. Thank you! SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 16:46, 19 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

A translation of a blog post

[edit]

Would you be perhaps able to translate at least a part of this blog post? It was written by my colleagues, it will be published on Diff, and we would like to have the Japanese translation. Once again, we have to ask volunteers for help :/ SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 13:40, 24 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

@SGrabarczuk (WMF), hi, are you discussing about en/ja translation? I find you link to some reports in ja. Guess a post reporting a Tokyo editing meeting in early June 2022 would be your subject. Am I missing something? Omotecho (talk) 14:54, 24 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
I'm only discussing about this single text. Everything that has been posted on Diff in Japanese was done by someone else. SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 16:05, 24 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
@SGrabarczuk (WMF), Hi, of course you noted requested translation was done. A small tip, no biting: Please be mindful not to mention country(ise) regarding languages of Wikipedias, advisable to mention country/region.
Background. Ja community has accepted or being arranged an Okinawan dialect as under-repersented dialect, that pops up in language toggle bar on Meta. IMHO, so does other umbrella/official language community in ESEAP region: we are proud that country/region holds local tongues that we support against extinction.
Note ♪=Okinawan, or Uchināguchi, an archipelago dialect with endemic sister tongues to each island.
Cheers, -- Omotecho (talk) 05:33, 7 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Graphs

Hello, Omotecho. I'm looking at Extension:Graph/Plans. It appears that graphs were used at the Japanese Wikipedia. Do you have any interest in this subject? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:47, 5 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Also, I will be looking for a translator for these messages soon. They're not on https://translatewiki.net yet, but the devs are working on it. I'll let you know when they're ready, in case you would like to do that. (Do not feel obligated.) Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:48, 6 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Extension:Graph/Plans/ja is almost finished, I mean, yet to think about where the invite to jawp users be wisely posted: the community has agreed anything earmarked as from:WMF automatically sorted out from announcements but into a secondary page, which is a cunning excuse to ignore our responsibility as global Wikimedians /:
Three threshold I can imagine to find more people who has a say to tell about Graph :
  1. Graph minded people INHO reads Tech News I hope;
  2. the Techy but not so bilingual mingle at the portal;
  3. Image/Graph creators acknowledge Wikimedia Commons.

Dark mode and changes to the font settings

[edit]
Prototype we'd like to test

Hi, I'm reaching out to you with some news about the project subsequent to Vector 2022. We're moving to the next project, Accessibility for reading. In short, this one will be about:

  • changing the default font size, line height, and paragraph spacing
  • adding options for logged-in and logged-out users to choose custom font size, line height, and paragraph spacing
  • building dark mode

We need to talk to communities to decide what the change will be exactly. We would like to invite Japanese Wikipedians for different reasons (because their needs may be very specific, and because we'd like to ask them for involvement as early as it gets). To do this, I need some translations:

Can you help with a translation?

[edit]

Hello Omotecho

I have two messages (one long, one short) to translate in Japanese. I hope you can help me?

As I know you are curious of new features, you might like it: this one is about Edit check, which encourages newcomers to add a citation when they add a paragraph to an article.

Thank you! Trizek_(WMF) (talk) 15:12, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi, @Trizek (WMF), kindly confirm the translated pieces: it's up to you to omit four ja characters from the longer message title. I took the liberty to add "※", or an in-line note: I often find it handier if the en term is given to search for extra info on meta or WM projects. Cheers, and gambatte ! -- Omotecho (talk) 16:07, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you SO MUCH for your help!
I think I'll keep the four characters, as they are a nice catching phrase. :)
