Currently, a version is only selected if the lines (blue/yellow or top/bottom lines) is in focus/selected (when the mouse cursor is "on the line"). I suggest simply clicking top or bottom part of the column to select the version. This way it is more intuitive.

thanks for your feedback. In the latest version currently deployed (e.g. on English Wikipedia ), clicking the bars to move the pointers should be possible. Clicking the top should move the newer pointer, clicking the bottom moves the older pointer.

Could you recheck or specify your problem more? :-)
