Is anyone able to use Content translation?

Are there any limitations of who can use the Content translation tool? For example, can an anonymous IP use it? Should be the editor be autoconfirmed?

There are several limitations at the moment:

  • Only logged-in users who activated Content Translation in the "beta" section can access the tool. Content Translation is provided as a beta feature so that users can opt-in, try the tool and provide us with feedback to improve the tool without affecting the experience of other users. Due to limitations of the beta features platform, only logged users can access the beta features (there is a ticket to expose beta features to anonymous users but here is not active work in that area as far as I know).
  • Blocked users on the target wiki are prevented to translate. Content Translation respects the rules of the target wiki for publishing (abuse filters, blocked users, etc.). So anyone that cannot edit the target wiki won't be able to publish a translation. For the specific case of blocked users, in recent versions we are trying to anticipate that situation to avoid the user to waste time in a translation that cannot be published and showing the error when accessing the tool instead.

@Pginer-WMF I official request that the tool is limited to auto-confirmed editors:

Editor with FIRST edit a page created with content translator...

Just to clarify. When I mentioned that "Content Translation respects the rules of the target wiki for publishing", it also includes any restrictions about auto-confirmed users. So if an auto-confirmed user is not able to create a page from scratch (using Wikitext or Visual editor), they will not be able to publish a translation with Content Translation. We see those restrictions, which differ from project to project, as an orthogonal issue with respect to the editor used to create the pages, so Content Translations is just following them.
