Remove iPad and tablets from mobile detection

Bachsau (talkcontribs)

I always hate when I come across Wikipedia with my iPad and am redirected to the mobile view. Mobile styles are optimised for devices with small screens like phones. They are also less functional than Desktop Sites, and tablets shouldn't be considered "mobile devices". --Bachsau (talk) 18:29, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

Sorry I get irritated when people don't post full facts, and gloss over certain facts just to back a point (Nemo I get that you don't like the mobile site). I will respond to Nemo separately but Baschau since you are on a MediaWiki discussion page, if you have a 3rd party MediaWiki you can turn this off with $wgMFShowMobileViewToTablets = false; If you dislike it on Wikipedia, we purposely give you the opportunity to click the desktop view link at the bottom and you should never be redirected again.

To reply to Nemo, firstly you mean 'editors' not 'users' (this data you post to says nothing about readers) and as you point out this is not a like for like comparison as currently no anonymous editing. It will be interesting to see how adding anonymous editing effects this. We just pushed a change to enable it in the alpha mode of the site, to start seeing what interest it gets.

You also forget to mention the data around toggling between mobile and desktop site.

To quote Maryana [1]

"Before the redirect, 13% of pageviews from tablets were hitting the mobile site, meaning a non-trivial chunk of users had opted into the mobile experience even before we were serving it to them as the default.

After the redirect, 95% of pageviews from tablets were hitting the mobile site, meaning a fairly small number of users are opting out of the mobile experience we're serving – smaller than the number of people who were opting out of the desktop experience before the redirect :)"

Jdlrobson, I do not understand the point of your reply: the link was a useful resource for me and contained all the context needed. Why did you make it personal instead of staying on topic? Also, nobody mentioned editors or readers in this discussion before you and there is no need to put words in Nemo's or Bachsau's mouth.
