Mobile web/Mission

Mission statement[edit]

Our mission is to create high quality, intuitive features that empower a global community of readers and editors to access and develop the sum of all human knowledge on any Internet enabled device

Drafting process[edit]

Brainstorming for the mobile web team's mission statement.

Positives[edit]

These are the qualities that we believe the team must embrace in order to be truly successful.

  • Have the power to engage a more diverse audience+++
  • Refocussing on the goal/mission - better quality, more contributors, more editors++
  • Staying true to the 'brand', or the ideals++
  • Compelling/intuitive interface; but not so 'easy' that it degrades quality of content++
  • Creating NEW wiki-audience+
  • Mobile is unique in being able to help with contributor goal
  • Recognizing that mobile will continue to grow (eg mobile traffic surpassing desktop)

Negatives[edit]

These are the qualities we believe would lead the team to failure.

  • Doing things without communicating well, buy-in with the community++++
  • The way we build things is shoddy, not focussed on performance; we're sloppy++++
  • A mixed-message; becoming a weird social media thing - maintaining QUALITY+++
  • Creating associations with OTHER sites, services - becoming too much like them+

Mantras[edit]

These are the things we can imagine telling ourselves in order to stick to the positive qualities outlined above.

  • We are the hope of the internet!+++++
  • We have the same goal! We are not eachother's enemies (especially during code review)+++++
  • (Fast) self-aware failure is always an option ++++
  • Drink vodka! Fall asleep.++++
  • Finding inspiration in the stories - remember why you're here+++
  • Inspire other people to get involved! Bring them into our community+++
  • We're all here for the same reasons; trust one another +++
  • We make the internet not suck!++
  • Remember that we're not just doing this for white, english speaking males 25-35++
  • Remember the end goal, rather than focussing on the journey++
  • The teammates get you through the hard times
  • Why are we here, what are our reasons for being here?

Goal for final mission statement[edit]

  • Keep it short, 2-3 sentenes
  • Something we can refer to in times of hardship

  • Finalize mission statement before next kickoff meeting; where it will be read

[Not sure about "web-enabled", but I'd like it to be more general than "mobile device." Plus, let's not forget that we'll be trying to conquer the desktop too ;)] JGonera (WMF) (talk) 18:42, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
