Notifications about new subscribers/publishers

MtDu, nice job putting this page together. It's helped my understanding a great deal.

I commented out some text in the lead section, that said notifications will go to subscribers "...when a new subscriber or publisher is added." Two questions:

  • Is it really true that subscribers will be notified of these things? That seems surprising, and I would hope incorrect. I think it's publishers that would want such notifications, no?
  • I tried adding a new subscriber and a new publisher on the test wiki, but I did not see a notification (and I am both a subscriber and a publisher myself). Perhaps it did not notify me because I made the changes myself? Or perhaps the functionality has not been built yet? At any rate, I thought more knowledgeable eyes than mine should be on the relevant text.

Also, I have not received email notifications, which are enabled in my preferences. If it's still being worked on, that's cool...just wanted to leave a note about it. -Pete Forsyth (talk) 05:23, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

@01tonythomas, please check the comments above. What notifications are expected to be received when publishers and subscribers are added / removed?

Email notifications not working might be simply a problem of our test installation, not having Echo/email configured properly? Echo takes care of delivering notifications, so there should not be anything missing on our end.

Alright. Took a look at it right now, and it seems like the Email service is down. Might be some problem with labs configuration ? as even Special:ConfirmEmail seems not to work. I tried adding in a new subscriber (not my logged in account), and yes - the notification came up. That would mean that the data reached Echo correctly. If Email functionality in the test instance was working properly, it can be safely **assumed** that the Email should work.

I also took a look at if we are doing self-adding-hide-notification cehck whcih @Peteforsyth was talking about. Probably Echo does that correctly as a `user-agent` param is set to the user performing the action during notificaiton creation, and https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Echo/Creating_a_new_notification_type#Defining_the_event_information says that is not the user who is going to be notified.
