Wikimedia Hackathon 2024/Documentation/Reports/Doğu Abaris

From mediawiki.org

The Wikimedia Hackathon is an annual event where tech enthusiasts and developers from around the world gather to collaborate, hack, and engage in discussions to improve Wikimedia projects. This year’s hackathon took place from May 3rd to 5th, 2024, in Tallinn, Estonia, with support from Wikimedia Eesti (WMEE), the local Wikimedia Foundation chapter in Estonia. While most activities were held onsite, some sessions were broadcast online to include a broader audience.

During the hackathon, I met with Gergő Tisza to discuss a previous code review for the Adiutor extension. The extension is currently awaiting security and performance reviews. Following Gergő’s advice, I pushed new patches focusing on performance improvements. I attended Martin Urbanec’s session on the Community Configuration extension. We brainstormed ideas, leading to the implementation of a new feature that allows settings to be fetched via an API. I assisted HakanIST from the WMTR team with tasks related to MediaWiki core. I provided guidance on submitting patches. Additionally, I had meaningful discussions with Sam Walton regarding the future of the Adiutor extension.

The Wikimedia Hackathon 2024 was a valuable experience, offering opportunities for learning, collaboration, and significant contributions to Wikimedia projects. The event was well-organized, fostering productive interactions among participants.
