Olot is a quite town rounded by volcanoes

The pre-hackathon in Olot will take place between 2 and 4 Feb 2018 in Olot, Catalonia, at Faber Residency (web). It is a warm up event linked to Wikimedia Hackathon 2018 and it will be focused on multilingualism, one of the key aspects of the whole Wikimedia movement. It's an event organized by Amical Wikimedia and Wikimedia Foundation, in collaboration with Faber Residency.

Scope

[edit]
Edward Bernard's Orbis eruditi, comparing all known alphabets as of 1689

One of the main tracks of the Wikimedia Hackathon 2018 that will take place in Barcelona is multilingualism. As said at 2016's Wikimedia Foundation Annual Report, most Wikipedia articles are in a language other than English. This is why we want to focus this Olot event on it. Developers, humanists and academics are welcome to attend. We want to create a safe and calm space where attendees can talk and discuss about the potentials and challenges of multilingualism in Wikimedia projects, in order to create some interesting wishlists for the Barcelona Hackathon and to start drafting, sorting and developing some prototipes. Two of our own wish lists topics are Non latin alphabets and Wikipedia's content translator tool, but attendees are more than welcome to add their own proposals. We are looking for a variety of profiles, so we can get the best out of this diversity. Our goals are preparing tasks for the May hackathon and deepening into the linguistic issue, trying to determine which are the technical challenges on Wikimedia in order to reach real multilingualism.

Venue

[edit]

Olot

[edit]

Olot (Catalan pronunciation: [uˈɫɔt]) is known for its natural landscape, including four volcanoes scattered around the city center. The municipality is part of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park. Olot is also well-known for its cultural activity, with historical art movements like Olot school or imaginary schools, which contributed to the location in the city of a big Design and Arts & Crafts school. It's 90' away from Barcelona city center and there is public transportation available. Olot is a small town, so everything is easy to reach on foot. There are many nice and easy walks and bike routes around Faber. Please check the maps and books you will find in the apartment.

Faber Residency

[edit]

Faber, the Arts, Sciences and Humanities Residency of Catalonia in Olot is a place for writers, translators, artists of diverse disciplines, scholars and scientists to stay together and to work on their personal projects for a time in the context of a thematic stay. Faber organizes several thematic stays during the year. Each one is made up by a few professionals who come to work on their professional projects related to the subject of the period. The Residency is a contemporary space which acts out of the interests of the hosting society. It collects ideas, opinion trends and worries of contemporary world. Amical Wikimedia has been partnering with Faber since 2016 and we are happy to collaborate with them again organising this prehackathon.

    • Can ORES integrate fixing typo proposals?
    • How to better interact between Apertium & Content translation
    • Have your ideas? Paste them here or on Etherpad!

How to get there

[edit]

From Barcelona to Olot and back

[edit]

The best way to come from Barcelona Airport to Olot is by bus; first you have to take a bus from Barcelona Airport to Barcelona city centre, and then another one from Barcelona to Olot. The Aerobus service is an express bus service that links Barcelona airport to Barcelona city centre. This service normally runs every 5 or 10 minutes within its fixed hours of operation. You can catch the Aerobus from outside both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The Aerobus will then take you to the city centre, Plaça de Catalunya. Tickets from both T1 and T2 cost €5.90 for a single and €10.20 for a return (return ticket is only valid for 15 days).

Once you arrive at Plaça de Catalunya there’s a ten minute walk (map) to the bus station at Pau Claris Street in order to take the bus to Olot. You can look for “Teisa Pau Claris” in Google or OSM Maps. Teisa is the name of the bus company, and here you have the timetable. The cost of the ticket is about 17 € (approximately, depending on the hour).

From Girona Airport to Olot and back

[edit]

You have a bus from Girona Airport to Girona Bus Station every hour from 5:30 AM to 00:30 AM (except 10:30). Please note you don't have any bus between 00:30 and 05:30. The cost of the ticket is 2,75 €. Once you arrive at Girona Bus Station, buses are going to Olot every hour from 06:45 to 21:00 (timetable) The duration of the trip is about an hour. The cost of the ticket is 7,45 €.

Hotel

[edit]

Faber is located at Hotel Riu Fluvià, on the Carretera de Santa Pau, 200 m from Vial Sant Jordi, a wide street that acts as Olot ring road. It’s only 15 min walking from the Bus station.
