Views of Montpellier

The pre-hackathon in Montpellier will take place the 14th and 15th of April 2018 in Montpellier, France. It is a warm up event linked to Wikimedia Hackathon 2018 and it will be focused on gadgets maintenance and updating, especially for the French Wikipedia.

Scope

[edit]

During the Wikiconvention francophone 2017, there was an open discussion about the state of technical things on the projects, especially the French Wikipedia. We observed that the gadgets [in the French Wikipedia at least] are hardly maintained over time and a lot of gadgets are written in old-style JavaScript, likely to break in case of deprecation of some part of libraries and possibly with security concerns.

The following tasks are within the scope of the event (non-comprehensive list):

  • Update or rewrite legacy gadgets to state-of-the-art JavaScript
  • Update the technical documentation and ensure it is consistent everywhere (or centralize it when possible)
  • Create a git repository that non-sysop developers can use to push updates to gadgets, etc. (Phab:T179550)
  • Maybe a training session for outsider JS devs who might want to create or maintain Wikipedia gagdets
  • Anything related to the creation of a Central Gadget Taskforce (phab:T159334)
