- Title style: Uses sentence case for titles. The title should be descriptive and specific. This helps visitors decide whether they would want to use the page. For example: "Accessing Instances on Cloud VPS" is much better than "Instances".

- Table of contents: MediaWiki automatically creates a table of contents when a page has more than three headings.[1] Use template:TOC to limit the heading levels displayed in the table of contents so that it is meaningful and concise. To save space, a table of contents can be opposite the title (right-aligned in LTR languages).

Checklist for landing pages
- Descriptive title: Because landing pages help organize and contextualize other pages, the title of a landing page should be descriptive enough to make sense when viewed directly from a search engine.
- Image: If possible, include an image relevant to the topic, such as a project logo. The image can be centered or aligned opposite the title (right-aligned in LTR languages) using
[[File:Example|{{dir|{{pagelang}}|left|right}}|30x30px]][2]. - Topic overview: To provide context, a landing page should include a section that introduces the topic or theme of the page. For example, a landing page for Toolforge should include a section that describes what Toolforge is, what is does, and who uses it. This can be under an "About Toolforge" section or, if it makes sense with the layout of the page, in the first section under the title.
- Small groups: When linking to other documentation pages, a landing page should organize links into groups of no more than six.[3]
- Link hub layout: When linking to other documentation pages, present groups of links in a way that is easy to navigate, such as Template:ContentGrid, Template:Colored box, Template:Contribution, Template:Portal list item on Wikitech, or a sidebar. Avoid organizing links with tables or headings.
- Maintainer resources: Landing pages help facilitate the maintenance of a set of documentation. If possible, include ways for people to participate by subscribing to updates, watching pages, joining editathons, etc. Be explicit about which pages to watch to help answer questions and monitor edits.
- Navigation between subpages: A landing page should include a navigation element that allows readers to move between pages within the collection, such as a sidebar, navigation box, or set of tabs. If the collection is organized using subpages, include a prefix search box.

Toolkits
Toolkits consist of a set of recommended tools and teaching and learning resources on specific technical skills needed for developing, growing, and maintaining small wikis. You can use these toolkits to learn a variety of technical skills or use them in workshops to teach more people.
Ask your technical questions
Is something unclear? Please ask! However, unfortunately we cannot offer (yet) the "one place" where you will definitely receive an answer to your question. Good places to ask are usually the Support desk on mediawiki.org (if a question about MediaWiki itself), some mailing lists and IRC chat channels, the Tech page on meta-wiki (if it's about a Wikimedia wiki), or the talk pages of the links above after you have checked that the talk page has actually been active lately.

We organize and track what to work on in the Small-Wiki-Toolkits Phabricator project. We sometimes have video meetings, and we might have other discussion places in the future once the group becomes bigger.
Develop toolkits
We want to provide a limited number of links to high-quality, task-oriented ("How can I…?") material. This often requires improving existing documentation first, to be consistent, up-to-date, and in simple English. We collect and discuss existing, non-optimal documentation pages for a specific area in a corresponding Phabricator task instead of listing ten "See Also" links for one topic on this very page. Ideally, we would also love to have short, well-done video tutorials on some topics, with subtitles that could be translated.
If you want to develop and document a toolkit yourself, here are some recommendations:
- Think task and user oriented. The question to answer is "How can I solve this problem?", not "Can you tell me more about this technology area?".
- Use the toolkit presentation template slides if you don't already have one. The template is also available in ODP file format.
- Include notes for trainers on the slides where applicable so that both potential trainers or learners can benefit from it. See for reference user scripts and gadgets toolkit source and its PDF version with detailed notes.
- Upload your toolkit with detailed notes on Wikimedia Commons & add the Small wiki toolkits category. In the File Description, add a link to the PDF source if you are willing to let a potential trainer make a copy and modifications to the source.
