Login status missing

Greetings and felicitations. I'm using Safari under iOS 12.4.1 (the latest version), and the sidebar menu item that tells me that I'm logged in (and asks if I want to logout) is missing. Also, similar to Pelagic's comment eight days ago, when I start to (try to) edit Wikipedia I'm not asked if I want to log in. This is important because my IP address ranges are currently blocked, so I am frequently confronted with the "blocked from editing" error message, which is frustrating. :-/ I hope these omissions can be remedied soon.

It is not missing. You should be able to see the logout button and other links in a drop-down menu if you click the userAvatar icon next to the search icon.

Ah—so it's been moved. I thought it was missing because it is no longer where it used to be—in the menu sidebar. Since I've never seen the (generic) "userAvatar icon" before it is not the most obvious place to look.

However, my other point still stands.

Hi, Doc, I think the part you saw was me referring to the iOS app. (I was comparing the AMC experience to other interfaces on mobile and got a bit carried away, sorry.)

If you're not logged in, then you should see the normal non-AMC hamburger menu with "Log in"? As far as I know they haven't yet implemented a cookie preference for IP users.

Possibly you were already logged in and didn't realise because of the interface change. I checked and I do get a prominent warning (with buttons for "Edit without logging in", Log in", and "Sign up") if I try to edit whilst logged-out.

In contrast, AMC's "Settings" hasn't moved (compared to normal Minerva). I keep looking under the user menu for Preferences, because I conceptualise it as a user function not a site function (or maybe just because that's where it is located in Timeless (user drop-down) and Vector (as a link grouping)). But I'm getting used to it.

Pelagic: "Possibly you were already logged in and didn't realise because of the interface change."

Actually, when I attempted to edit I was receiving a "You have been banned..." warning because I wasn't logged in and I was trying to edit from blocked IP address ranges.  Now after I refresh the window/"tab" (sometimes it takes more than one try) I'm asked to log in, so the problem has been solved, if only in a somewhat inelegant way.  Unlike before (previous versions), I am also automatically logged in if I open a new window/"tab" from one in which I am already logged in.

As for Preferences, I too wish it was in the user menu, if only to make checking my score number of edits easier. ;-)

Lastly, I'm not sure which mobile interface I'm using, except that I have Advanced mode and Beta turned on, and I have not downloaded the mentioned app.  In the past I have used the default Source editing mode, and do not know "Minerva", "Timeless", or "Vector".

Pelagic (talkcontribs)

Vector is the default appearance for the desktop web site, and Timeless is an alternate desktop skin that adapts quite well to mobile screen sizes. Minerva is the mobile appearance, but you can choose it for desktop. You can see them listed along with some other choices at Preferences – Appearance on the desktop (not mobile) site. Unfortunately we don't have a choice of different skins for mobile yet.

About changing mobile skins, this has been tracked in phab:T173527. But the task is currently trigged as lowest priority, so I assume it will take some time for WMF to work on this task. Apparently mobileskin preferences are hidden. I wish there is a way to enable it using API.

P.S. glad to hear that reloading the page helped.

I'm still receiving the "You have been banned..." warning. Any progress on adding a "Do you want to log in" option?

DocWatson42 (talkcontribs)

Bump. It's still happening (mostly). I'm now running iOS 13.2 and Safari, and can edit without a problem pages in tabs into which I am already logged in, but I still don't get prompts to log in on those tabs on which I am not already logged in.
