I'd like to be able to add HTML from an external site (via its API) into wiki pages.

Personally I'd advise using an embedding technique using iframes. I'm not sure if there is a an extension which is very well maintained, but something like https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Iframe might qualify.
What about writing a short extension that just uses file_get_contents (and sanitises what it receives)?
Extension:Widgets can do that, that's how the YouTube widget works. It's an iframe.
