In the day and age of the electronic document, I wonder why we limit the scope of the document generation to PDF alone. Wouldn't and shouldn't we be thinking about PDF / EPUB / MOBI / ... collectively in our outputs rather than looking to generate a document that is set to a standard page size and is not greatly extensible?

Easy.. resources! Who's doing it ? :) Currently all of this is hardly maintained to begin with. And the previous extension is failing because no one is resourced for it. I don't see this easily improving in the short term.
