Hi Jeroen,

I don't know if you noticed the 'hoped-for' item I added to the Summer of Code 2012 page, predominantly workflow improvements to aid in Wikinews' use of Flagged Revisions and the actual task of reviewing articles. Your name is at the top of the list of volunteer mentors, and I would really appreciate if you could look over the outline(s) in my userspace and give feedback where you see it as appropriate.

To be honest, looking through some of the Semantic Wiki extensions it looks like a few might help on Wikinews were they available for the main MediaWiki codebase.

Your proposal looks great. Some additional details would be good though, such as what exactly you are planning on adding/changing.

Not sure if I'd be able to mentor you much in this, since I am not really familiar with Wikinews or Flagged Revisions. I know what they do and have used both to a very small extend, but am not familiar with the details or codebase. You will probably be better of with a mentor more familiar with these. Maybe Ryan Kaldari? I'm not really sure if anyone who signed up as mentor has much experience with Flagged Revs, but it's worth asking them :)

Semantic MediaWiki or something similar could greatly help out many of Wikimedias projects, including Wikinews. Unfortunately SMW does not meet some of the requirements top be put on these projects though, so getting it these is not going to happen for your GSoC project. We are working on something new to add such capabilities, see meta:WikiData WMDE for more info.

Jeroen,

Thanks for the very positive feedback! I'm in no way capable of undertaking the work myself as part of GSoC; my PHP knowledge is basic, and not improving at a particularly rapid rate. Since I started earning a living in IT about 25 years ago, a lot has changed and I've not kept up with everything.

I'll chase up on your suggested contacts/improvements to my 'vague scribblings'. On reflection, they're quite well-constructed for something done in a hurry between the hours of 01:00 and 05:30. My general hope is that someone will have a Eureka! moment and propose an implementable solution by looking at the issues with a fresh set of eyes.

I'll go bug Ryan, and take a look at the WMDE stuff; I really hope some of the Semantic MediaWiki features can be ported to the main codebase - even as extensions. To me, at least, it looks like a substantial amount of the code therein would kill off something I saw at countless customer sites I worked at all over Europe. Namely, abandoned SharePoint implementations which companies had written-off tens, sometimes hundreds, of thousands of Euro of investment in.

Cheers!
