questions[edit]

  1. $250,000 grant is to start when?
  2. Quoting teh 5 specific activities from the article: User testing and research on current user behavior to understand the search and discovery experience. (how and where and why?)
  3. Creation and maintenance of a dashboard of core metrics (of what?) to use in product development. (what product?)
  4. Research on search relevancy and the possibility of integrating open data sources.(why search relevancy ?)
  5. Open discussion with the Wikimedia community of volunteer editors and technology experts.(about what? And why does that need money? Could do it now)
  6. Creation of prototypes (of what?)to showcase discovery possibilities.

A couple unofficial responses, from someone involved with the Discovery team, who has had no involvement with Knight or the grant itself:
  • Dashboard: See http://searchdata.wmflabs.org/metrics/ for examples of what I think they probably mean. I believe "product development" here refers to whatever product(s) are necessary to meet user needs, which so far is things like improving Cirrus search.
  • Why relevancy? Because (anecdotally) searching from within wikimedia sites often produces irrelevant results, and/or fails to produce relevant ones.
