Clarity of "Subject / Description" field names
Was it a considered design decision in 2022 that the message body field be called "Description", or is this a placeholder? Something like Enter your message here would seem much clearer, although I don't know what other contexts this system string might be used in.
I'm wondering how much of the talk page confusion that happens on enwiki (eg. people posting what seem like web search terms, or trying to enter text-to-image prompts at Talk:Midjourney) is new users not realising what the context of their entered text will be, when the website asks them for a "subject" and a "description". Belbury (talk) 11:39, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
- Perhaps nobody watches these pages. I've moved things forward with a proposal to change the text on enwiki, at en:Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Rephrase_the_talk_page_box_"Description"_prompt Belbury (talk) 15:58, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
Subscribe to new topic
There's a checkbox to watch the entire talk page, but what I want is to subscribe to the topic (ideally for any changes but at least for replies). IMO this should be the default when creating an H2 topic on a talk page. Jruderman (talk) 12:18, 13 August 2024 (UTC)
- The default can be set, using the Automatically subscribe to topics option in your preferences. There’s no checkbox to control it on a case-by-case basis, but you can simply press the Subscribe button next to the topic header after you’ve started it. (Due to how DiscussionTools works, all subscriptions track recognized comments; unrecognized comments and other edits in the section don’t generate notifications. If you want to be 100% sure that you don’t miss anything, page watching is still your only option.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 17:09, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
- +1: I came here to request the same thing. The same feature should also be available when replying within any section. —CX Zoom (A/अ/অ) (let's talk|contribs) 20:21, 26 January 2025 (UTC)
Question
- There are two editing modes. On one, every time I press shift to make a capital letter (See beginning of comments <<<}
[Reappearing cursor] "It moves my cursor to the beginning of the comments in front of the actual beginning comments
- Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong and how I can fix this? -- Otr500 (talk) 14:06, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
Pasting in Chrome for Android
In Chrome for Android, when pasting clipboard content into an input field, the content appears in the field but is not recognized as an input action, resulting in the Submit button remaining inactive. Shirayuki (talk) 00:21, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
- I believe a trick here might be to just add and delete a character quickly to register an input action, works on my Android (although not on my Chromebook). Hope that helps. Qoppa-kappa (talk) 05:33, 8 February 2025 (UTC)
Ich will nur den Quelltext bearbeiten. I only want to work on the source code.
Ich habe einen vorgefertigten Text, mit Überschrift und alles. Wie soll ich den bitteschön einfügen?
Ich will die normale Option "den Quelltext bearbeiten" und nur den Quelltext.
I have a pre-written text, with a heading and everything.
And please: how am I supposed to insert it? I want the standard "edit source" option and only the source text.

- @Mjchael You use the page edit functionality at the top of the page, same as for an article, instead of reply. On mobile, in the dropdown for the page is “edit full page”. —TheDJ (Not WMF) (talk • contribs) 12:45, 2 October 2025 (UTC)
- This is only useful, when there is not a lot of stuff on the page. Otherwise you coud delete a part of the content. (Think about deleting discussions with hundrets of files in one day on one page). --Mjchael (talk) 21:00, 4 October 2025 (UTC)
- The new topic tool has a source code mode – just click on Source in the upper right corner. That will allow you to paste the wikitext you have already written (and you can switch back to visual mode if you want to format the pasted text in a WYSIWYG way – or stay in source mode and do any eventual formatting manually). You could also disable the new topic tool in your preferences, returning to the traditional new section interface, but I don’t think it’s any better than the new topic tool in this regard – both allow you to paste wikitext, and both require you to enter the heading in a separate field. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:59, 4 October 2025 (UTC)
