BlueSpice VisualEditor integrated the JavaScript-based WYSIWYG editor TinyMCE into MediaWiki. The TinyMCE extension project is continued under the extension name TinyMCE.

BlueSpice VisualEditor was a comprehensive plugin that converts wiki text to HTML and vice versa. This allowed users to edit pages without any knowledge of HTML or wiki code.

Hallo Welt! needed a WYSIWYG editor to support the use of MediaWiki in companies and organizations that required such an extension as a key feature. In 2010, TinyMCE was chosen. Since then, TinyMCE has been an integral part of the enterprise wiki of Hallo Welt! (especially in the distribution BlueSpice MediaWiki, free and pro edition).

Development priorities:

  • The continuous adaptation of the parser so that when switching between the WYSIWYG editor and the Wiki editor's source code view, the MediaWiki tags were preserved and not replaced by illegible HTML code.
  • Enhancement of the functionality to insert links, categories, templates, images, documents, tags, buttons and checklists via wizards.
  • Integration of PasteImage to insert image files via drag&drop or copy&paste.

2017 Hallo Welt! announced the release of BlueSpice 3 for 2018. With this release the MediaWiki VisualEditor will be delivered as standard and will replace the TinyMCE solution. Meanwhile, Duncan Crane and Yaron Koren continued the TinyMCE extension project.

This extension is still in use for all BlueSpice 2.x. versions.
