One of the challenges faced by users new to Mediawiki is locating the information for which they are looking. Most users are familiar with organizing information in a file system using directory trees. Although MediaWiki offers categories to group related information, navigating categories can still be a challenge for new users. The CategoryTree extension aids this process, but using the extension requires navigating away from the article the user is reading or editing.

The Browse extension will implement a Lightbox-style page overlay with a Finder inspired category tree browser. There are several goals:

  1. Help users navigate the wiki by providing an interface that is familiar, accessible from any page, and persistent throughout a session.
  2. Help gardeners manage the category tree structure and identify incorrectly categorized pages.
  3. Show users where they are, where they've been, and where they can go.
