User talk:Linkdude101/New OpenHatch content

The original description on OpenHatch gives no information on specific ways people can help MediaWiki. I added links to different ways they can help out, such as translating and bug testing. In addition, I added information about alternate MediaWiki venues, such as extensions and mobile development. I also linked to a tutorial and the IRC channel to get people started. Hopefully, these changes will provide a clearer picture and path for people interested in collaborating with MediaWiki.

You have got the right basis. Very good! Let's polish the details:
  • "MediaWiki"could link to a page describing what is MediaWiki.
  • Now "Wikimedia projects" could have a link as well to a page listing them.
  • Even "thousands of wikis" can link to a page with more information about this.
  • MediaWiki extensions are not only written in JavaScript, and this is why I removed it. Please mention the main languages used by extensions. You can find the information at the Manual, also here.
  • You forgot to mention Gadgets.
  • Mobile is not only about the Mobile frontend. Please find the right page where all the mobile projects are described, including the Android and iOS mobile apps.
  • "Helping out may be daunting at first, but tutorials and IRC channels are available to help." Mmm... I see your intention and it is a good intention, but saying "daunting" to newcomers is not very appealing. Let's direct interested contributors to Project:New contributors/Starter kit (which is the result of another GCI task!).
Last but not least, openhatch.org doesn't take wikitext. When we have agreed the text you will need to create an HTML version for easy copy&paste. You also need to decide whether you want to publish this yourself or not.
Don't be scared for all this feedback! Your work is very good, and this is why it deserves an extra push towards perfection.  :) --Qgil (talk) 18:10, 6 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
