Wikimedia Hackathon Local Meetup Accra 2023 is a local meet up event of the main Wikimedia Hackathon 2023. The Hackathon is for anyone who contributes (or wants to contribute) to Wikimedia’s technical areas - as code creators, maintainers, translators, designers, technical writers and other technical roles. You can come with a project in mind, join an existing project, or create something new with others. The goal of this year's local meetup is to bring together technical writers,code creators and maintainers from Ghana to contribute technically to the local meetup of the upcoming Wikimedia Hackathon 2023. We are looking forward to have 85% visual documentation contributions for Wikimedia tools and technical areas across wikimedia projects, 10% maintainance on Wikimedia technical areas and 5% for the creation of new wikimedia tools to enhance the user experience on Wikimedia projects.

This local meetup will have a pre-hackathon training session on 13th May 2023 which will be a training session to onboard newcomers and prepare participants for the main local meetup on 27th May 2023. Newcomers are welcome to attend the pre-hackathon session and the main local meetup.

To talk about the format of the event being physical/in-person, as the world is opening up, we also feel that it does make sense to host an in-person event rather than online, of course with all appropriate safety measures. During the last two years, we realized that many things can be organized online, however, certain components of in-person events such as forming new social connections don’t work well in an online event, which are also crucial to a community. So we would like to take this opportunity for this hackathon to be an in-person event.

Note: This year's local meetup will take place in an in-person format, for which scholarships will be provided (travel, food, and other related expenses). We will also be providing wikimedia swags for contributors with the most and creative contributions to this local meetup.

Information to Applicants

Unless there is a valid medical reason, it is mandatory for all participants, organizers, and invitees to be fully-vaccinated against COVID-19.^[1]
Participants are not allowed to bring friends or relatives to the event, unless it is absolutely necessary (only with prior information and approval).
We will only be able to provide scholarship support to contributors currently residing in Ghana.

Program[edit]

This year's local meet up will solely be based on visual and media technical documentation of wikimedia tools and technical areas,creation of new wikimedia tools, improving existing wikimedia tools and to be in sync with the main hackathon program wherever possible.So if you are code creator, technical writer or code maintainer living within Accra or you will be available in Accra on 27th May 2023.
