The MediaWiki Users and Developers Conference (MWUD, U&D, #MWcon), formerly EMWCon, will be held from April 17-19, 2024 in Portland, Oregon, United States. The conference is organized by the MediaWiki Stakeholders' Group with the help of its sponsors and partners.

The Users and Developers Conference will be a three-day conference featuring discussions of topics related to the usage of MediaWiki software by and within companies, non-profits, governments, organizations, and communities. If you use MediaWiki or you're interested in it, we would love to see you attend.

Sessions will be recorded and streamed. While this will primarily be an in-person conference, we will consider remote presentations on a case-by-case basis.

Local accommodations[edit]

The Jupiter NEXT and Jupiter Original are next door to each other. The NEXT, where the conference is being held, is a modern boutique-style hotel, while the Original is a mid-century motor lodge.

To keep the cost of the conference down, we strongly encourage you to stay at one of the Jupiter hotels if you are coming from out of town.

The conference does not have a minimum age requirement. However, the minimum age to check in to this hotel is 21 years old. In case you are considering attending but are under 21 years of age by April 17, please contact the Social Chair for further assistance.

Transportation[edit]

If you are staying at the hotel, you will not need a car for any part of the conference. All events are either at Jupiter NEXT or within walking distance. If you require disability accommodations, please contact the Social Chair so we can help you arrange that.

You can take Portland's public transit system to get from Portland International Airport to the Jupiter Original and NEXT hotels. The one-way fare is $2.80 and you can conveniently pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, or a contactless card. Take the MAX Red Line from the airport to the NE 7th Ave station. Then, walk due south on NE 7th Ave until you reach Burnside St, at which point turn left and walk two blocks east. The Jupiter Original and Jupiter NEXT will both be on the south side of Burnside St.

In case you are driving to the conference or if you want to rent a car for other reasons, there is first-come first-served surface level parking for $15 and FCFS underground parking for $25.

Keynote[edit]

We are honored to have Ward Cunningham joining us to present the keynote talk, entitled, "New Discoveries Mining Federated Wiki’s Recent Changes". Ward, the inventor of the wiki, has contributed broadly to the field, including in the areas of design patterns and extreme programming.

Remote attendance[edit]

Talks will be livestreamed to YouTube during the event, with individual videos for the talks being made available shortly after the conclusion of the conference. Chat during the stream will be monitored, so feel free to ask questions to the presenters even if you are remote!

Program[edit]

The first two days of the conference will be reserved for presentations. The third day of the conference will be a Create Camp, which will include tutorials, hands-on presentations, and small group hacking sessions. Sessions for the Create Camp may be added as topics of interest are discovered during the presentation days.

Notes for presenters[edit]

In order to make the conference go more smoothly, presenters should abide by the following guidelines. Please contact the Program Chair as soon as possible to request any exceptions.

  • All presentations will be by presenters in attendance in person at the conference unless approved in advance by the Program Chair. Please contact the Program Chair as soon as possible to request a remote presentation.
  • There will be no live demos during the presentation days. Prerecorded demos with the speaker talking over the video are fine.
  • Presenters will provide the Program Chair with their presentations by Monday, April 15. If your file format is non-typical, please discuss this in advance with the Technology Chair or Program Chair.
  • All presentations will be presented from a conference laptop. No switching between multiple laptops for presentations.
  • If a Create Camp session has any special technology needs, please coordinate in advance with the Technology Chair.

Please note that certain people have pre-ordered their lunch choices ahead of time for Wednesday and Friday. If you did not get a chance to pre-order your lunch, rest assured we have food for you, but please kindly allow people who made pre-orders to grab their choices first. On the other hand, all breakfasts and Thursday lunch options are first-come first-served.

If you have questions or concerns about your dietary restrictions, please ask the Social Chair on-site for further clarity.

If you contact the Social Chair by March 29, 2024 with your dietary restrictions, we will likely be able to accommodate it. We will be submitting our order to the restaurant at the end of March and we may not be able to accommodate your dietary restriction after that date.
