AbuseFilter for profanity[edit | edit source]

May I let you know? I've compiled a list here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/67842559/approved.txt - Or if you could compile a short list and let me know how to add to it myself, I will gladly do so. If you could also make a short example of blocking profanity, I'd appreciate that too. Additionally, would it be possible to alert users when they're not linking to an approved site? It would be easier letting them know what they can do if they were given a list of approved sites. Thanks so much again. --MarPuma (talk) 06:04, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

I'll start working on abuse filters for you soon. :) --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 14:19, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

Alright, here are the filters I've come up with. They should do the trick.

!("sysop" in user_groups)
& (action == "edit")
& ("://" in added_lines)
!("(.neopets.com|.neopet.com|.neoplants.com|.petpetpark.com|.monkeyquest.com|.nick.com|.jellyneo.net|.sunnyneo.com|.thedailyneopets.com|.drsloth.com|impress.openneo.net|www.s2bookworld.co.uk|lost.quiggle.org|ntwriters.proboards.com|neochat.wordpress.com)" in added_lines)

Set the actions for the filter to take on that to "Prevent the user from performing the action in question". To prevent profanity, use a filter like this:

("(phrase1|phrase2|phrase3|phrase4)" in added_lines)

And just replace "phrase1" and the others with the profanity you want to prevent. Set that filter to "Prevent the user from performing the action in question" as well, and you should be good to go. If that doesn't work, let me know. --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 15:39, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

Abusefilter[edit | edit source]

Hi again, I'm the user who originally asked for help AbuseFilter right above. I've finally gotten around to adding the filters you've designed, and they don't seem to work at all. The first issue I had was an "Unexpected T_OP" - It didn't like the "!" in the "!("(.neopets.com". I've done some testing, and users still seem to be able to post links to any location they please. Could you help me look into this again? --24.119.228.163 00:52, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

Hmmm, I'm not sure. Abusefilter isn't something I'm great at except for simple things. You may have to ask someone else in #mediawiki on IRC to help. Did the profanity filter work though? --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 00:56, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
Oh yes, that worked perfectly. I just can't seem to work anything that works in such a specific way - "Only allowing items on the list, and disallowing the rest". --24.119.228.163 01:09, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

restore User:Tomahawk please?[edit | edit source]

User:Tomahawk is using mw.o as a place to demonstrate some wiki handling and analysis skills as a candidate for a WMF staff position. Could I have you restore the page? The objectionable content will be removed shortly.

Thanks Cmcmahon(WMF) (talk) 22:06, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

Alright I'll do so shortly, probably when I get home (on mobile right now). Apologies for deleting it; it was flagged for speedy deletion as spam and had a bunch of external links so I didn't think twice before deleting it lol. --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 22:22, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
From now on we'll do these exercises in test2wiki instead of mw.o. Sorry for the inconvenience Cmcmahon(WMF) (talk) 20:28, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
It's alright! --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 20:30, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

Ha ha! I found what might be a bug with external links. Didn't know I was violating the protocol. :) which link was objectionable? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tomahawk (talkcontribs)

Not really that they were objectionable; moreso that they weren't related to MediaWiki.org's project scope and seemed random (usually how spam link are). --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 20:30, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
Ok, good to know. That explains the terse warnings when I was posting the links. ;)
The "bug" is that there were three Captcha requests for each posted link. I would have expected only one. Is that normal for Mediawiki.org? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tomahawk (talkcontribs)
I'm not sure; I haven't experienced a Captcha here in years lol. I don't think that there is usually one Captcha for each link, but I may be wrong. It may be a bug though, and even if it is intentionally that way, it's a dumb way of doing it. You could probably bring it up on Bugzilla since it's a weird functionality, whether it's a bug or not. --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 21:18, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply! I searched bugzilla and didn't see anything similar. I'll test on other browsers and platforms to scope it out before reporting.
It only happened with external links, currently in Chrome on Mac and Opera on Windows. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tomahawk (talkcontribs)
Yeah, it sounds like a bug in the software. Go ahead and test it some more and report it on Bugzilla. :) --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 21:27, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

Template:UserLinks[edit | edit source]

Hi. Regarding this edit, isn't there already a "rights" link in that template? The "grant permissions" link seems redundant. --MZMcBride (talk) 06:00, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

My bad. I'm so used to seeing the rights link in bold on those kinds of templates where I completely overlooked it here. --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 10:18, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

BlogPage[edit | edit source]

Hey there! I see you've spoken with my partner before (AbuseFilter section above) - Aside from that, I was told you may be interested in this: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=66090 . I've also let UltrasonicNXT know about this as well. I've already spoken with Ashley about it, just to be clear. --Lumario (talk) 22:02, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'm CCed on the bug now and have given some ideas on it. --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 03:15, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

MeikoBot is now +bot[edit | edit source]

Hey,

I've closed Project:Requests/User rights/MeikoBot as done – it's now a bot.

Alright, I probably won't be able to run it for a few weeks since my computer's hard drive failed, but glad to know I can run it here now! --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 16:42, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
