From mediawiki.org

I used to be quite an active wiki spam fighter, and set up a bunch of info over on chongqed.org on how to combat spam. Annoyingly that site went offline, but a fair bit of my advice remains on this wiki. I haven't been following trends much lately, but...

Just recently I got involved in helping some people with MediaWiki. Some notes on how to purge existing spam: User:Halz/Mass despamming

Internet-wide wiki spam[edit]

On an internet-wide scale it's annoying to me that spammers are quite often successful, even though it would be fairly easy to keep out a lot of spam, or to tidy it up afterwards. To see what I mean google 'mediawiki ugg boots'. This success rate means that spammers quite like attacking wikis, where otherwise they might concentrate elsewhere (e.g. blog comments) This in turn means that some of them are starting to raise their game and making it quite difficult to filter out their spam.

Occasionally I get a glimpse into the way spam actually happens. Check out edwinsoft.com . At the moment I suspect a lot of spam is due to this software. They're all merrily chatting about it on their forum there. What a bunch dicks.
