Do we need to save space on desktop?

looks YesY Resolved and oddly full of spam

The bar can save space of a small screen, but in full view nothing should have been touched. Standard and some additional links have enough place on the top of the window, there is no need in hiding them into a droopbox and make a user to do extra clicks.

Ignatus: have you taken a look at the Winter prototype, this might shed some light on some of the motivation why we'd like to make the personal tools more compact in order to give more emphasis to both search and the actions of messages, notifications, and watchlist.

Jaredzimmerman (WMF): Please add this prototype to Beta features as soon as possible. It is important for you to get feedback early in the making.

Gryllida: We're working to have a beta feature for winter in 6 months or less.

Ignatus: Think about smaller screens, or in a long way about third party changes to the Vector skin. In my case i'm happy to have this solution, because other elements in my own highly customized vector based skin are bigger and near the personal bar. So it's very good to have the possibility to change the style of the personal bar in this beautiful way, without loosing of user experience. The other point is: What about netbooks or smal desktop screens? Not everyone has a big screen (on desktop too, not only mobile), so this is the right way i think :)

Florianschmidtwelzow: on small tablets or phones this menu will likely behave more like the drawer on the left side of the mobile skin.
