This is one of those decisions where the balance is very difficult, because we all have different ideas of the ideal end-state, both for ourselves, and for 'all other editors/readers' - eg. I personally like ultra-dense typography in my paperback books and internet sites, but I completely understand the joy that others have found in the current design choices (and the refs that support generally larger and clearer setups).

Quiddity (WMF): A possible solution would be to have a preference for flow density settings. Google (Gmail) has: compact, comfortable, cozy. We could do the same. Make everyone happy by giving them choice.
