WikiWord is a system for extracting a multilingual thesaurus from Wikipedia. It was developed original as the diploma thesis of Daniel Kinzler [1] and is now developed by Wikimedia Deutschland.
One possible use of the data generated by WikiWord is a language independant search/navigation for Wikipedia and, especially, for Wikimedia Commons. This will enable users to find images about a given topic regardless of the language they use for searching. A rough proof of concept interface is available on the Toolserver
Further uses of the multilingual thesaurus generated by WikiWord lie in the domain of information retrieval and semantic integration. We hope to be able to provide the thesaurus on a regular basis for re-use, by researchers and otherwise.
