What version of MariaDB is required?

This page states: "MySQL/MariaDB is the recommended DBMS. ... The supported versions are:

MySQL 5.5.8 or later" It does not identify what version of MariaDB is supported. Wikipedia is currently running 10.1.34, while this site is running 10.1.33, so that appears to be safe. Current is 10.3.8. Are there any known reasons for sticking with 10.1 versus 10.3 such as incompatibilities? What about MySQL 8.0.12? 5.7.23? Are there any compelling reason to choose MariaDB over MySQL or vice versa? Thanks.

Are there any plans to make MediaWiki easier to upgrade?

Are there any plans to make MediaWiki easier to upgrade? So that it can be updated as easily as WordPress can? And same for installing and updating extensions? Thank you!! Cheers.

Well, there is T187128, but nothing more concrete.
