Placing the beta "opt in" in the footer is going to be problematic as we'll be removing that as a navigation and option tool. We've already agreed that we weren't going to cram more options into it and i don't see why we should be breaking our decision here. Lets move it somewhere else. With the current navigation, there really isn't a good place to put it:
  • Heather had a mockup where we would introduce this as a dialog box, but that would be way too intrusive on our readers. This is not a general-purpose feature -- beta has experimental stuff and the users we want are users that are okay with things breaking.
  • There isn't a good place in the header, and I'm not sure we want it in the header even if there were a place for it
  • We could potentially put it as an option underneath the "W" icon, though I don't think there is space for us to provide adequate explanation to the user re: what the beta is
  • We could dock it on one of the sides of the app, but again, I don't think it deserves that kind of prominence. This would also draw in a lot of users who shouldn't be using the beta (e.g., users who aren't okay with stuff breaking).
  • I do see many sites have a small dialog towards the bottom center of the screen. But again, we have the same problem that this would draw in general users.
Brandon, Phil and I are working on some nav constructs that will help us solve this and other issues. I'm not familiar with the conversations leading up to the decision to not mess with the footer, but can we just put the opt-in link there in the meantime? I know it kind of sucks, but there aren't really very many good options here. Howief 23:31, 10 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

When a user leaves the beta might it be useful to prompt them for feedback on why? jon 20:23 16 February 2012 (GMT)
