The same. We should have a broadly consistent experience. It causes enough problems that editors don't think about how their content is going to look on mobile, please don't introduce a new "reader" experience on desktop to worsen this.

I only read languages in Latin script, and wouldn't select differently for them. Don't know about other scripts.

I feel like the current font size is fine, especially now the line length is limited (to be clear, I think that's a beneficial change). Users can change the overall zoom in their browser if they want. Increasing the line-height slightly seems to help readability, and since we rely a lot on superscripted notes it makes sense to give them a bit more breathing space.

I am monolingual, but I have been involved in some discussions about {{Lang }} and how to select appropriate fonts. I am sure that any preference of font size and spacing will depend heavily on the script (and hence the font) chosen.

My commiserations to you: the better this project does, the less it will be noticed. Accept my thanks now, in case when it is finished it is so good that people say 'What typography improvements?'.

Changing the font size without changing the line spacing is a recipe for a bad result. I therefore suggest that you provide a fourth slider that changes both font size and line spacing in proportion with each other. This would help users who have found a good text height/line height combination, and want to change the overall text size.

It appears to me that the paragraph spacing either side of section headings is p+k above, and p below, the heading, where p is the paragraph spacing and k is a (small) constant. When p is small, the ratio of space above:below is about 3:2, or 5:3. However, when p is larger, it gets more like 7:6, ie it approaches 1:1. This means that the section headings lose their connection with the paragraph below them and start to look like independent entities. Can you make the above:below ratio more consistent?

I note that when p is increased, it does not affect thumbnail images which immediately follow the section headings. The top of the paragraph drifts below the top of the image, spoiling the look of the page.

While I can only read Latin alphabet, I would definitely expect readers in other scripts to prefer larger font size. I've spent a lot of time resolving tech issues on projects in different languages, and some of them already use larger font than the default, e.g. Chinese Wikipedia (zh:).

I tried 16px font size for a few days, since Wikipedia's font is on the small side compared to most other long-form text I read (newspaper articles, books in PDF). It felt surprisingly heavy though. Maybe Arial isn't the best font at that size.

I really wished that the survey tool would also apply in other namespaces, especially on special pages. Being forced to switch back to the default font size when viewing my watchlist was really distracting, and I expect that any change to the font size will feel more drastic for many special page interfaces than the articles.

Bigger font size and generous line height is usually better for legibility, as long at the characters per line stay within the reasonable range. The settings above were made very quickly. I am a graphic designer so I can spend hours setting the right font size and line height and paragraph spacing, but something in that direction rather than the current tiny packed text would be nice. Limiting the line width with the new Vector design was already a great move!

I use an add-on for Firefox with several layout options, some of which you're adressing now and some others such as a serifed font option (which I prefer) and a dark/sepia mode. I think those could be interesting to try. Either way, I hope the user experience improves with those accessibility features, either for reading and editing.

I think the most significant change that could be made is reducing the width of sentences, to somewhere around 50 - 70 characters (in a Latin language like English). My biggest problem reading Wikipedia on a desktop computer is that the line length is so long, I need to move my eyes frequently, leading me to lose my place in the paragraph. A shorter line length has become a standard recommendation in web design and accessibility circles, AFAIK.

These answers relate to reading en.wiki (also trying to generalise beyond the slightly unusual situation of the dab page on which I was asked) on the desktop browser. I think these preferences would also stand for other Latin script languages, but on the occasions when I read zh.wiki (although that tends to be more usually via Android app rather than desktop browser), I would prefer larger character sizes (the acuity of my eyesight has several age-related problems). Easy availability of a custom slider in the Tools pulldown could be useful.

Having adjustable font options like the ones provided in this demo (though maybe with clickable buttons to adjust a slider one-tick-at-a-time more easily for mobile users) in an easy-to-access way would be nice for accessibility (as long as you double-check that it doesn't conflict with OS- or browser-level text size options) for readers and editors, and could also help with the current mission (eg. the new skin) for making Wikimedia look "cleaner".

No question pertaining to font size or typography since these are easily customization on browser's end. A responsive design Vector (2022) skin as I switches between devices of various screen sizes from the largest 27" monitor to smallest 6.7" iPhone. While no issues on devices with larger screen sizes (i.e. 13" and above), it is certainly hassle to edit using the Vector skin on mobile hence it would be great that Vector is rewritten with responsive design which as a web developer myself isn't not too hard in terms of design/coding but would certainly be time consuming ... Bootstrapify cloning would be quicker lol. While I understand that there are already responsive skin like Timeless that exists, I don't see it as a replacement as it is certainly not the default skin for registered/non-registered users nor does the contents written for Timeless skin first, it is always written for Vector skin first given that majority of the users uses that skin hence their editing (content's formatting) would be written with what they are seeing in mind. While for mobile which defaults to Minerva Neue skin, I also don't see it as Vector skin replacement, with too many limitations such as the lack of navboxes, huge tables with multiple columns rendering as super narrow if nowrap class wasn't used in which usage of nowrap classes is often "rejected" by other editor for various reasons, diff is hard to read/differentiate between despite the colors to differentiate exists, gadgets/userscripts (like anti-vandalism tools) not design for mobile first nor I have come across one that works on mobile, horrible wikitext editor with no syntax highlighting (top reason why I always avoid this skin for editing purpose), and among others. With the various limitations of Minerva Neue skin, is the reason why I use Vector skin in desktop view on mobile for editing/moderating instead of fighting the Minerva Neue skin and causing stress to myself, while the Vector skin in desktop view on mobile is not perfect due to narrow viewport and lack of responsive design, it is overall still perfectly usable without any hiccups just small only but zooming in/out would do the trick however having a QoL responsive design update would certainly be welcome which would also resolves the limitations of Minerva Neue and also replace it entirely.

Font size and spacing should be adjustable. Different visual abilities may require that individual adjustments are necessary. On the otherhand, my normal screen appears at font 14 and on this page typing right now is at font 9 which is tiny for me, (and a completely different size - possibly 11 - in preview). Another issue, IMO is that use of various language typefaces and fonts (I write many, many articles about internationalists) within a single article should be uniform and standardized. For example Gijidō o kakonda Hito no Nami (The Wave of People that Surrounded the Diet) do not appear to be the same typeface, i.e. variances in thickness and depth of color. The line/paragraph spacing should automatically adjust when I change the font size. Let's say the default was a font-size of 15 and a line-height of 22. If I increase the font-size, the line-height should also increase proportionally, because if line-height stays fixed then the entire text will look cramped. Same with paragraph-spacing so that it will be easier to tell each paragraph apart, it should also adjust proportinally. (This is how ebook readers like Kindle and Moon Reader behave.)

Used to be mostly reading, nowadays mostly editing (mostly using VisualEditor, mostly improving citations)

I don't know. I would guess that being proficient at reading and having good eyesight would both make someone capable of reading at smaller sizes. To me, the main advantage of smaller sizes is being able to see more at once, reducing scrolling and perhaps even eye movement.

Imo, 14 is the ideal font size for reading Wikipedia because readers most often come to skim! Larger font sizes are inconvenient for taking in the subject at a glance / finding specific information or links. Most people come to Wikipedia because they're looking to quickly get the gist of something or check one piece of information, so it should be easy to spot what they're looking for without having to do tons of scrolling.

Potentially, yes. Cyrillic pages may benefit from different settings (possibly 15 pt font?) because the script is much less differentiated than Latin (Cyrillic letters are boxy and all have the same line height). Overall, however, I think the current defaults are fine even for Cyrillic, for the same reason as above (ease of skimming is key).

I think Wikipedia is quite reader-friendly already and would vote to leave the defaults as-is! However, I think that informing new arrivals that the tool to change font size and line height exists (so that they can make changes for themselves if they want to) would be great, it's really handy.
