Extension:SubPageList

[edit]

Reverted your recent changes. Not appropriate on the extension page. Better put them on the general sub pages help page. --Jeroen De Dauw 09:39, 11 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

OK, will do. Badon 20:26, 11 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

count format

[edit]

how about

{{#ask: [[Category:Some category]]
        | format=count| default=0
}}

--Hypergrove 16:57, 9 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

The default parameter has never worked for me. Does it work for you? I haven't investigated further to see if it's a reportable bug. I'm using MW 1.18 and SMW 1.7.0.2. Badon 17:56, 9 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
I tested this a little further, and I don't think the default parameter is supposed to function in count queries, because at the very least, count should always produce 0 as a default. So, specifying a default value should be ignored by #ask and have no effect. Badon 18:12, 9 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

User:Badon#Giving gifts to Project?

[edit]

What do you think about housing User:Badon#Giving gifts in project space, maybe within the Extensions WikiProject? --Varnent (talk) 03:58, 27 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

That's a brilliant idea, where do you want to put it? One thing to keep in mind is that it should apply to everyone, in every area. Extensions are great place to plant the seeds of my gift-giving ideas, but I want make sure that people are encouraged to take a look at the user page of every person that answers a question, gives a helpful suggestion, fixes bugs, adds features, does testing, shares useful advice, etc, etc. Naturally, you have to start somewhere, and I think the Extensions Project is the perfect place.
Also, have you heard of ChipIn?

Hmmm, I'm on the fence on this one.. One part of me is curious where the conversation on extension donations goes. Another is wondering if we should start with core bug fixes, which may be a more popular and neutral territory..
--Varnent (talk) 04:47, 29 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'm sure there are many ways the WMF can take the lead. Start with advocacy in encouraging extension developers to maintain their extensions, and go from there once an obvious next step becomes apparent. Badon (talk) 05:46, 29 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
It looks to me that the Mozilla Foundation, via their captive Mozilla Corporation, is encouraging financial support for developers of Firefox add-ons (equivalent to MW extensions). They have pioneered a system that seems to be working very well, so there's no reason for the WMF to reinvent the wheel, other than to add our own spin to it.
There are several ways Mozilla allows add-on developers to solicit donations. In most add-ons, simply clicking the "Add to Firefox" button downloads and installs it immediately. In Tree-Style Tabs, the user is shown a page solicitng a donation while the add-on downloads and installs. In QuickWiki, there is an unobtrusive solicitation for financial contributions below the "Add to Firefox" button, without a dedicated solicitation page.
Giving developers a choice of how they prefer to ask their fans to support them is a good idea. Everything from facilitating the giving of anonymous unsolicited gifts as I've described on my user page, to Mozilla-style developer-defined solicitations, can all be implemented. For people like Yaron Koren, allowing or even encouraging them to add a link to their commercial endeavors (WikiWorks in Yaron's case), could be greatly beneficial to the developers, and encourage them to fix bugs, polish their code, add features, and keep up with the ample funding behind MediaWiki's fast development pace.
What do you think?

Extension:RawMsg

[edit]

I see you flagged Extension:RawMsg as {{Incompatible }}. There is a fix already posted on Extension talk:RawMsg; the extension is in use on http://desciclopedia.org/wiki/Google (try a Google search on-page and it actually sends you to the real Google) a MediaWiki 1.20 (trunk) site. This is just the same $wgMessageCache->addMessage() issue that's breaking many other extensions under 1.18+ but it's entirely fixable. --Carlb (talk) 11:57, 28 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

I saw your fix, but I felt flagging it was appropriate until the fix is properly integrated. I flagged it to draw attention in the hope that someone would see that a fix is already available, and needs to be integrated. Badon (talk) 19:18, 28 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks!

Hello. You seem to be very familiar with MediaWiki and pretty active on this wiki. Would you like the editor permission? --Jasper Deng (talk) 02:36, 6 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I would. Thank you for your consideration! Badon (talk) 02:40, 6 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Template profiler

[edit]

Hi, Badon, I just noticed that you asked about the template profiler extension several months ago. I should probably check that talk page more often :). Anyway, the profiler continues to work perfectly for me in 1.19, and AFAIK should continue working in 1.20, though I haven't tried it yet. Zocky (talk) 01:22, 26 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

How to import .js files to Common.js

[edit]

Hi Badon, I saw your post in the discussion section of Extension:Javascript asking to clarify the usefulness of the extension vs using the built in Common.js. I am not sure what the extension offers to a user over the built-in Common.js. However, that is only if a user knows how to include/import .js files into the Common.js. I understand for Common.css its @import url(...); But what is it for Common.js? I was trying to use "include url('...');" but it does not seem to work for me. Could you point me in the right direction so that I do not have to use the extension?--Tnlu5t (talk) 15:25, 27 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

I don't know the answer to your question, but I'm sure someone in the mailing list or support desk would be able to help:

Welcome to Russia

Regarding TrueCrypt story: as a citizen of former Ukraine who writes from Moscow at the moment I can only welcome those concerned (but lacking resources or courage for fighting back on-site) to Russia -- there is some actual freedom here. --Michael `gvy` Shigorin

bug bounties on mediawiki

[edit]

Hello, I'm looking for guidance on how to use bug code bounties to fix issues on mediawiki. Can you advise? I've brought up the issue here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Open-source_bounty and here https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:How_to_report_a_bug#How_to_pay_for_specific_bugs_to_get_fixed_on_Wikimedia.3F Thank you. 28aug2016 DennisDaniels

Unfortunately, I have become largely inactive due to the difficulty of playing Whac-A-Mole with the endless granting and revoking of IPBE's on every WMF site (including Wikipedia), despite having a global IPBE. I had to spend more effort begging for individual IPBE's than actually contributing, and by the time the IPBE gets granted (AGAIN!!!!!!), I've forgotten what it was I wanted to contribute.
