 Типографічні зміни і налаштування, що роблять сайт більш доступним

Інтерфейс проєктів Вікімедіа мусить бути доступним і читомим, незалежно від мови чи писемності. Це стосується як більшості, так і осіб з конкретними потребами. Одначе поточна типографіка стаціонарного і мобільного вигляду сайту ускладнює читомість. Крім цього, нічна тема може бути помічною при слабкому освітленні і для користувачів, що віддають перевагу низькому контрасту при читанні. Наші інтерфейси наразі не мають такого функціоналу.
Ми холи б змінити стандартну типографіку. Також ми створимо додаткові параметри типографіки і нічну тему, що будуть доступні у налаштуваннях. Ці зміни будуть доступні як для залогінених, так і для незалогінених користувачів.
Project overview
As part of the 23/24 annual plan, the Web team's goal is to bring appearance settings for all users and change the default typography of all wikis. The default font size and text line height for all users across wikis will increase. This increase will improve readability for the majority of users. The team plans to make this deployment alongside the deployment of a new appearance menu which allows controls for page width, typography, and the upcoming dark mode – meaning that users will easily be able to adjust the font size back to the previous default.
The team plans to initiate discussions across all wikis, focusing on debugging current features and generating ideas for future enhancements. Then, the team will proceed with deployments, bringing the appearance menu to all users and the new typography defaults to logged-in users only. The deployment will be conducted in two steps, initially targeting a small set of wikis for testing before implementing changes across all wikis.
The decision to modify default typography is informed by research findings and accessibility recommendations. Currently, the WCAG recommendations for font size start with a minimum of 16 pixels and a AAA recommendation of 18 pixels for easy reading. Our current default is 14 pixels. This makes it more difficult to read (when compared to similar sites for long-form reading that are following these guidelines). On the other hand, we are aware that scannability (being able to scan and quickly find specific information within the page) is important for Wikipedia and that we should limit changes in text density when setting a new font size. The planned default font size is 16 pixels. This is based on:
- Readability research, academic studies, and market research: these sources indicated that generally bigger is better in terms of font size.
- Most long-form reading websites (such as news websites or social media) opt for somewhere between 16 and 18 pixels. In the two studies that specifically focused on increasing the font size of Wikipedia, researchers determined that increasing size improves comprehension.
- Our own research has shown that most reading sessions are 20–30 second long. This isn't enough to digest and change a type setting. This option gives the readability benefits of the new default to the most people possible with the least amount of user effort.
- Accessibility recommendations
Community-proposed designs: 632 logged-in users from 13 Wikipedias submitted designs with typography settings that they considered as comfortable for them. While many designs focused on keeping the default the same, the majority of designs chose a larger font size.

Результати тестування користувачами
При провели тестування зручності використання меню Вигляду. Тут можна ознайомитися з повними результатами. Якщо коротко, то у меню Вигляд (раніше меню Тема) розміщено налаштування типографіки, ширини і кольорової теми. Тестування мало показати, чи цим меню легко користуватися і чи назви різних налаштувань інтуїтивно зрозумілі більшості користувачів. З цього тестування ми дізналися:
- Жодних значних проблем зі зручністю не виявлено.
- Користувачі зазвичай віддають перевагу називати кольорову схему «темною» або «нічною». У результаті ми зміни назву функції назад на «темну» кольорову тему або ж «темний режим».
- Користувачам було важко знайти іконку меню, коли воно згорнуте. Тому ми додали сповіщення для користувача про те, куди саме згорнулося меню.
Дані про використання бетафункції
Ми спостерігаємо за використанням нового меню як бетафункції. Повні результати можна подивитися тут. Якщо коротко, то ми дізналися до «стандартна» опція була найбільш популярною для вибору. Ми також побачили таке:
- Близько 55 % натискань на нове меню були для розміру шрифту більшого, ніж за замовчуванням (для стандартного або великого)
- Більшість натискань, 46,7 %, були для «стандартного» розміру шрифту.
Це підтверджує те, що більшості користувачів зручнішим є шрифт більший, ніж поточний за замовчуванням. Раніше ми вже побачили це під час тестування прототипу спільнотою. Ми використаємо ці дані при прийнятті рішення про нові значення за замовчуванням.
Темний режим уже доступний
Темний режим уже доступний для залогінених користувачів у мобільній версії сайту (лише оформлення Мінерва)! Щоб отримати доступ до цієї функції, треба увімкнути на мобільному розширений режим. Далі можна вибрати «темну» тему у переліку можливих. (Примітка: значення «автоматична» відповідає налаштуванням пристрою). Головні сторінки показуватимуться на повну ширину
Зараз головні сторінки, як і статті, показуються з обмеженою шириною. Зважаючи на макет з двома колонками, зображеннями і поточною типографікою, довжина рядків там (у символах на рядок) прийнятна. Коли розмір шрифту за замовчуванням збільшиться, довжина рядків стане дещо закороткою. Тому ми вирішили вимкнути обмеження ширини на головних сторінках за замовчуванням. Натомість вони показуватимуться з повною шириною, як і спеціальні сторінки. Більше технічних деталей дивіться тут: T357706.
Передумови
Чому важливо працювати над цим
За минулі кілька років ми впровадили у багатьох вікі оформлення Вектор 2022. Ми розробили його для покращення досвіду читання. Іншою метою було забезпечити одночасно зручність для наявних користувачів і привітність для нових користувачів. Однак, ще залишаються проблеми з читомістю, які нам слід вирішити. Однією з проблем, які ми визначили під час досліджень для того проєкту, був розмір самого тексту.
У порівнянні з більш доступним цифровим текстом, для читання нашого контенту (і в стаціонарному, і в мобільному вигляді) потрібно більше часу. Також є вплив на здатність запам'ятовувати прочитаний текст. Важливо пам'ятати, що люди читають текст не лише зосереджено, а й побіжно.[1] Ми хотіли б поліпшити нашу типографіку для обох цих способів використання наших проєктів.
Також на нашому вебсайті не можна встановити розмір шрифту, що буде зручним для користувача. Натомість читачі з особливими потребами і вподобаннями мусять покладатися на функціонал браузера для зміни розміру шрифту. Ці можливості різняться у різних браузерах і не завжди підтримуються рештою нашого інтерфейсу користувача. Це викликає проблеми з інструментами або навігацією.

Get involved and Contact
- Promote and adjust the code on wiki, following our recommendations: to roll out our changes for logged-out users, community-controlled code, like templates, needs to be adjusted. It may need discussions on village pumps. It will also need many edits. Help us by starting such conversations and making such edits.

Project evaluation
We will measure the success of this project with qualitative and quantitative methods. In particular, we will be looking at:
- Research-supported decisions in prototype creation and development
- Qualitative improvements in readability based on user testing and community conversations
- At least X% of all sessions longer than Ys who customize typography
- Note: exact variables TBD
- At least X% of all sessions use night mode
- No significant change in reading depth
