Wikimedia Technical Conference/2018/Small Group Dinners

From mediawiki.org

On the evening of Monday October 22 we will be splitting up into small groups, ideally between 5 and 8 people. These small groups will head out to different restaurants around the city of Portland.

Tips
  • Try to sign up for a group full of people that you don't know very well.
  • If you get lost from your dinner group meet them at the restaurant, and email your group leader to let them know that you are coming.***

Notes for group leaders[edit]

  • Each group leader will need to submit an expense reimbursement to the WMF for the dinner. Rachel will provide the correct forms / template.
  • Please make sure to include an itemized receipt and write the names of everyone in attendance on the back.
  • There is a $35 USD per person maximum including drinks and tip and tax. If your group exceeds this amount, please have the group cover the rest on their own.
    • If you expect your restaurant to exceed $35 per person and people should expect to pay more on their own, please say so below in your description so that participants can make informed decisions and bring cash.
  • You should take care of any reservations needed on your own, if you need help please ask and we can help.
  • Meetings will end at 5:30pm at the Elliot Center. You can either meet and leave from there or give people some time to return to the hotel, relax, and meet later. It is up to you!
  • We have public transportation tickets (each valid for one day) available to those folks that want them, in order to get to and from the small dinner locations.
    • Please see Rachel for your free ticket!
  • You are welcome to include other optional plans along with your dinner (example: Dinner at Restaurant followed by optional walk around Downtown), but WMF can not cover the costs of any other activities.
  • Previous examples of this process: from 2014, from 2016, from 2017
  • Restaurant searches:
  • Restaurant suggestions (please add!)"

The St John's Beer Porch - Ian Marlier[edit]

Type of food
Food trucks! There are about 12 or so food carts, serving a variety of food, along with a bar that serves a number of Portland-area breweries. Very laid back vibe...
Menu
http://the-st-johns-beer-porch-portland.sites.tablehero.com/ and http://dehomis.com/food-carts-at-st-johns-beer-porch/ will give you a sense. It's not the most organized...
Meet and Transport
The one downside is that it's about a 15 minute Uber/Lyft from the hotel.

Meet in the hotel lobby at 6:30PM, and we'll take a rideshare over from there.

Total Diners
Effectively infinite, but let's call it 8 for ease of planning.
Notes
I was in Portland a couple of weeks ago, and had a chance to visit the beer porch. It's amazing. I loved it. I want to go back, and I think you should come too!

Grassa - Josh Minor[edit]

Type of food
"Despite the epic eagle motif on the wall, the stoner-rock on the turntable and general industrial feel of the place, you cannot get a tattoo at Grassa. You can, however, get meticulously crafted bowls of fresh pasta on the fly, paired with traditional and seasonal salads, delicious appetizers and tasty cocktails."

Meet and Transport
Meeting at hotel at 7, 5 min walk from there.
Total Diners
Lets say 6 for those looking for a smaller group at a smaller spot.
