Essential Work

[edit]

Weekly essential work update for 2026-W20

Shipped

[edit]
  • MediaWiki demo environment, Patch Demo, wikis are re-namable:
    • Previously, each demo url was a random hash (e.g., https://cc157ef861.catalyst.wmcloud.org). Now, users can name their environments (e.g., mywiki-articleguidance-5914acf49f16.catalyst.wmcloud.org).
  • Deploy tool updates: rollback, error checking, security audit.
    • The MediaWiki deploy web app offers to rollback if error-rate checks or smoke tests fail. Previously, users had to initiate a new deployment to rollback to a previous state.
    • MediaWiki's deploy tool has always checked the error rate on canary servers. Now it also watches for errors briefly following a full deployment.
    • Responded to AI-generated security review – Added rate-limiting for 2fa attempts and better input validation. Overall, we were in good shape.
  • Dev environment updates:
    • Fundraising developer images now on latest Debian.
  • Gerrit CI upgrade – Zuul, our CI backend for Gerrit, needs to be updated, but it's a big change. This week, we got the Kubernetes workers accepting jobs (thanks to a small upstream fix https://opendev.org/zuul/zuul/commit/b090253170ec201175a6ef7df7f5601f337a8282 )
