Other projects[edit]

Updates from Translate, Universal Language Selector, MLEB and other projects.

Development update[edit]

MLEB[edit]

No MLEB was released this month. Next MLEB is planned for April.

Extensions[edit]

There was quite active work on many extensions this months driven by mostly volunteer patches (bolded) and code review help from the Language team. The team is working to reduce the backlog of open patches and aims to review new patches more quickly (more details). In this month the backlog of each extension either did not grow or was reduced somewhat.

Translate:

  • About 80 patches were merged in total.
  • Siebrand Mazeland contributed tens of code quality and cleanup patches.
  • Fomafix contributed multiple bug fixes for unreported issues.
  • Glaisher submitted a fix for long standing and annoying high priority bug in Translate that caused some translatable pages not to update properly.
  • Aaron Schulz contributed patches to reduce usage of master database server in favor of slave database server.
  • Niklas Laxström had multiple patches related to updating the autosize feature of translation edit area and improving the placement of insertables, making them more consistent across browsers.
  • Niklas Laxström contributed many code cleanup patches.
  • Niklas Laxström fixed bugs related read-only mode and warnings in Special:ImportTranslations.
  • Niklas Laxström fixed a bug that prevented message group selector from working properly in Internet Explorer and Edge web browsers.

Universal Language Selector (part of MLEB):

  • Siebrand Mazeland contributed many code quality and cleanup patches.
  • Fomafix contributed a WebAPI code cleanup patch.
  • Ori Livneh contributed a patch to compress some more bytes out of the PNG images.
  • This extension includes code from jquery.i18n, jquery.webfonts, jquery.ime and jquery.uls. See their updates below.

cldr (Common Locale Data Repository) (part of MLEB):

  • Sam Reed updated the data to CLDR release 29.
  • Siebrand Mazeland contribued many code quality and cleanup patches.
  • Kghbln contributed a license file.

  • Ricordisamoa contributed patches to code quality and new features.

TranslationNotifications:

  • Niklas Laxström and Siebrand Mazeland contributed some code cleanup patches.
  • Glaisher provided a bug fix related to not failing in read-only mode.

CleanChanges (part of MLEB):

  • Siebrand Mazeland contributed code quality patches.

LocalisationUpdate (part of MLEB):

  • Kghbln contributed a license file.

TwnMainPage:

  • Siebrand Mazeland contributed code quality and cleanup patches.

jquery.i18n:

  • Ricordisamoa contributed code quality patches.

jquery.ime:

  • James Forrester and Siebrand Mazeland contributed code quality patches.
  • David Chan contributed a big refactoring that makes input methods easier to integrate with visual editor.

translatewiki.net[edit]

  • Raimond Spekking registered 7 new extensions (Login Notify, Upload Links, Wikimedia Badges, Page Assessments, Wikibase Media Info, Active Abstract, User Page Edit Protection) for translation and removed 2 (OAI, GoogleApiClient) and changes to many others.
  • Siebrand Mazeland removed APC extension from translation.
  • Niklas Laxström and Siebrand Mazeland registered Pageview Analysis and Revision Scoring projects for translation.
  • New "autosync" (or continuous translation) feature has been tested and is now in regular use. All message changes for projects are synced to translatewiki.net three times a day (new messages automatically for non-MediaWiki projects; mobile apps are excluded). All translations are synced to project repositories either daily (MediaWiki projects, by Raimond) or twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays (other projects, Niklas and Siebrand) (mobile apps excluded). This helps to make messages available for translation earlier and also translation to get into use earlier.
  • Project repository configuration is being moved to new system written in PHP and declarative configuration in JSON to simplify adding new repositories.
  • MediaWiki Job runner setup was changed by Niklas Laxström so that new jobs are picked almost immediately rather than checking for new jobs once every minute.
  • Uptime for translatewiki.net was 100% except for brief, less than 60 seconds, database maintenance jobs.

Usage data[edit]

  • Translatable pages: Meta 2736 (+79); MediaWiki.org 2978 (+17); Commons 441 (+4)
  • Translate extension is installed on 217 wikis (+0), according to Wikiapiary
  • Stats from translatewiki.net [1]
    • New users: 120
    • About 390 active translators made about 59.000 edits
    • About 120 active translators reviewed about 20.000 translations

Deployments and other site related updates[edit]

  • Yandex is available as optional Machine Translation system on Content Translation for Basque, Bosnian, Haitian, Icelandic, Latin, Maltese, Mongolian, Swahili, Tagalog, Tajik and Urdu.
