  • We analyzed the results of our Android Year in Review Reading list A/B test, and shared results on the project page.

December 2025

  • Year in Review was released to all users on December 2!
    • Based on social media sharing, users' favorite slide is the "Top articles read" slide. Users are also really utilizing the "highlights" slide for sharing. We’re seeing a much larger response on social media compared to last year

  • We looked at early impact from Year in Review
    • From our 5-day indicator check we learned that
      • 73% of active app uniques during the time saw the prompt for Year in Review, 1.8 Million people.
      • 17% of those who saw the Year in Review prompt are clicking through
      • 62% of those who entered the feature are viewing 2 or more slides
    • Android and iOS Year in Review combined generated around 3,700 direct donations in total. This was 29% of all non-banner "app menu" donations received during the month of December on apps and 9% of all one-time donations received during the month of December on apps.
      • For iOS, we saw a 26% increase compared to last year in non-banner donations from Dec 2 - 31
      • On Android we saw a 23.7% increase compared ot last year in non-banner donations from Dec 2 - 31
    • We evaluated the results from our personalization A/B test on the iOS app, and results are shared on the project page.

  • The Android and iOS teams continued development on the core flow of Year in Review. We plan to release the feature to users on December 2nd. Our work is being coordinated on these epics
  • The apps were not suppressing fundraising banners after folks make a donation through other means, such as Year in Review. Since Year in Review is releasing at the same time as banners starting for Big English, we decided to add banner suppression for those who have donated recently (to match the web’s 250 day donated cookie) ahead of the Year in Review release https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T410156.
  • The Android team completed work on the additional Year in Review reading list experiment.

October 2025

  • The Android and iOS teams continued development on the core flow of Year in Review. We plan to release the feature to users in early December.
  • Thanks to a partnership with Data Platform Engineering, we updated the “Total edits” figure to be global edits across projects for 2025. That way, edits from all projects can be reflected in the Year in Review, and we are not limited to the user’s first 500 edits. Last year we were limited to pulling the first 500 edits for the user’s primary language Wikipedia.
  • We formulated A/B tests to run within each app along with the release of Year in Review, so that we can learn how to improve retention of app users.
    • On Android, we will be running an A/B test offering an extra benefit to Year in Review readers — a customized reading list based on their top articles. Learn more at Year in Review Reading List Experiment. The A/B test of the reading list is coordinated on this sub-epic: T404267.
    • On iOS, we will be running an A/B test that allows some logged-out users to view personalization without logging in. Learn more at Personalization for logged-out users experiment.
  • We completed usability testing with the iOS version of the feature.
    • Learnings:
      • Overall there are positive indicators that the personalized elements will enhance the experience for logged-in users. Logged-in users were more satisfied with personalized slides than logged-out users that saw collective slides.
      • The reading patterns, top articles, top categories, and geo slides were of particular interest to users. These were new slides added after our learnings from last year’s release of Year in Review.
      • People would like to see more dynamism with the slides and increased customization, particularly as it relates to the final highlights slide.
    • Next steps:
      • We will make some improvements based on user testing before the December release.
      • More time-intensive requests will have to wait until next year due to the time-sensitive nature of the feature.

  • We completed several spikes on iOS to investigate what would be possible to add in the 2025 version
    • Explore offering users an ability to see which geography they read about the most. T401450

  • Usability testing with the updated iOS feature is underway, with both logged-in and logged-out users in English and Japanese. We’ll incorporate learnings and improvements from testing into the 2025 edition.
