Why call this thing "feeds" rather than "suggestions" or "recommendations" or similar? A "feed" is typically time-based. Speaking of which, I recommend dropping the idea to promote recentism, which hardly fits with the Wikimedia mission. "Trending articles" and "In the news" would significantly reduce the utility of Wikipedia. Nemo 11:32, 27 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

"Feeds" is more of an internal name. In the iOS app, for example, the external name is "Explore." I agree that recentism is a negative in the context of editing specific articles, but I don't really see an issue in encouraging users to read more Wikipedia articles related to current events. Related efforts[edit]

How does this effort relate to m:Requests for comment/Related Pages? Nemo 11:35, 27 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Only in the sense that we'll use the same API for retrieving related pages to display in a Feed card; not much otherwise. DBrant (WMF) (talk) 20:18, 27 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Home page display[edit]

Do I understand correctly that you want to stop showing the main page of each project as first thing in the app? This would mean that the app has a different home than the website and that editors would no longer be in control of the home; I hope I misunderstood. If you really wanted to do such a thing, you'd need an enormous consensus; I'd suggest to contact at least all the editors who edit the main page (and transcluded pages thereof) of each Wikimedia wiki. --Nemo 11:38, 27 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Native apps are great at delivering personalized content to the user (by integrating very tightly with the device), and mobile users have come to expect this from the apps they install. What we're trying to accomplish is to make the app become more of a destination for the user; something to which the user looks forward to coming back again and again, without necessarily having a research topic in mind. The intention is by no means to take away any power from the editors of the Main Page (it will still be accessible from within the feed). We're simply interested in providing a more personalized and interactive portal to Wikipedia at the user's fingertips, which is also more in line with the native experiences the user expects from modern apps. We're using this as an opportunity to experiment with these new kinds of experiences, and see how they impact user retention and engagement. DBrant (WMF) (talk) 20:14, 27 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
If you show something different from the main page when the users access the applications then you are effectively replacing the main page and removing its control from the wiki's community. The whole purpose of the main page is for it to be the first thing users see when they visit the wiki. --Lsanabria (talk) 16:04, 16 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
