Post your feedback about using the visual editor.

If you have never provided feedback before, you can learn how to do it effectively. If you are reporting a problem directly on this page, please include your web browser, computer operating system, and wiki skin (usually Vector, sometimes Monobook). The feedback tool within the visual editor will include your user agent details instead.

You can use this page to tell the Wikimedia developers your ideas and issues about using the visual editor: this is the only feedback page actively monitored by WMF staff. The Contributors team welcomes your feedback and ideas, especially on user interface decisions and the priorities for adding new features. All comments are read, in any language, but personal replies are not guaranteed. Please note that the Wikimedia Foundation does not provide support for installing VisualEditor on third-party wikis. Please report bugs involving Parsoid at Talk:Parsoid instead.

You may also want to read a guide to optimize the visual editor's experience on your site, which details work necessary on the community side (such as translating or setting up citation systems).

Unable to change quality flag in wikisource

While proof reading in page namespace in Tamil Wikisource using visual Editor there is no option to change the quality flag from "pink" to "yellow" or "green" or other colours. Hence it is posing difficulty in proof reading.

Appreciate the report. Adapting the visual editor to Wikisource is done by volunteers, so you may want to reach User:Tpt. Elitre (WMF) (talk) 09:25, 12 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hi,
how to reach User:Tpt
Sorry it may be a silly question. But I am not sure how to reach him.
Regards Balaji (talk) 19:02, 12 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
You can leave a message at their talk page. Elitre (WMF) (talk) 19:04, 12 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hello Balajijagadesh, you could change the quality flag in VE by clicking on the quality banner (the one that is English Wikisouce states "This page have been..."). There should be a small editor that allows you to change the quality flag just like what it is possible for templates. Tpt (talk) 23:59, 27 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Preview button desperately needed

It is nice, that you are all working hard to make the editing easier. I appreciate that.

But I'd really really like to see a button at the top, that allows me to see a preview without taking a long round trip. I don't understand how that happened, that this button isn't there with that new edit view. Or really, how did that happen? Seriously? "Show changes" + "show preview" are the only two buttons that most of the users actually need. Comment here is simple: "If you need a button to add a link, then please use a Visual Editor."

P.S. That text on top of the feedback system, that should show where this comment will be published (VisualEditor/Feedback) doesn't actually link to the right place. Kruusamägi (talk) 23:33, 6 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

There have been a lot of complains about the preview button being hard to find / awkward to access in the 2017 wikitext editor. A phabricator task has been open on the issue for a year. There doesn't seem to be much work on beta-editor recently. There is an EnWiki consensus against the beta editor due to bad performance issues and faulty previews.
Note: There's a separate page for 2017 wikitext editor/Feedback. Alsee (talk) 10:24, 8 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
> I don't understand how that happened, that this button isn't there with that new edit view. Or really, how did that happen?
They used the same dialog box for VisualEditor's 2017 wikitext mode and its visual mode. The workflow was optimized for the visual editor (several years before the wikitext mode was built), so it's not ideal for the wikitext mode. I think they'll be considering a few changes to that in due course. In the meantime, you might be interested in learning the w:en:Wikipedia:Keyboard shortcuts for those actions; in most browsers, they are the same keys for all of the wikitext editors. That will allow you to bypass the Save dialog. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 20:25, 18 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

I accidentally moved a page from my account to someone else's. Now I can't publish it.

Templates on top

On Dutch Wikipedia I tried to add the template nl:Sjabloon:Zie artikel (See article) to nl:Grenadines. This template works well only when placed in the top line of the text. In pages with infoboxes the Zie artikel template is placed below the infobox, leaving an unsightly white gap as high as the infobox. I can't find a way to get the template in the top line. Invoking the template interactively or by typing {{ makes no difference.

Btw: Windows 10, Pale Moon browser (a Firefox clone).

Yes, of course switching to the old editor does the trick. But this should not be necessary. Bertux (talk) 20:16, 9 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

This has nothing to do with Visual Editor or Parsoid. If you move that line below the infobox in the source editor and preview it, you see the same whitespace gap. The problem is probably with either the infoboxes or with the Zie artikel template in terms of either its CSS or the HTML they generate. SSastry (WMF) (talk) 16:19, 11 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Rosa Vill, https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usuario_discusión:Rosa_Vill explains why your edits are being reverted. You can follow the links on the page to learn more. Are you copying and pasting the text from somewhere else? If you want to set the text to the default size, you can select it and then look for the "Grande" option in the "Estilo de texto" -- "Mas" menu. This will un-set it as big in your case (as it is currently set as such). Elitre (WMF) (talk) 15:52, 11 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

As an example, I was working on Gabrielle Onguéné. The link to her 2015 World Cup Profile was already in the article but in the infobox. When I used the citation tool, it did not recognise the reference as already existing. I've added it in in this (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Gabrielle_Ongu%C3%A9n%C3%A9&oldid=814758669) edit but will go back to fix. Just thought I should give you a heads up.

Good afternoon,

I saw an error while editing an article with a table. While editing normal text, the links are normal (they are showing down), but in the tables, the links list is sometimes showing up, which is not normal (before, it was always showing down). The links lists, which are something showing up, are also getting very far from the editing area, being covered only with the tools list up from the editing area. See my screenshots at cswiki: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TableError1.png, and on enwiki: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TableError2.png. Thank you for fixing. Awewewe (talk) 15:35, 13 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your message. That issue doesn't happen to me in 2 browsers (Safari and Opera on a MacBook Air). Please include details about your web browser, computer operating system, and wiki skin. Also, could you please try to append &safemode=1 at the end of the URL and try to reproduce. TY! Elitre (WMF) (talk) 16:12, 13 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Elitre (WMF): I use Google Chrome, operating system Windows 10 and Vector skin. Appending &safemode=1 doesn't help. Thank you for your answer. Awewewe (talk) 17:35, 13 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
OK. Let's see if someone with that config can also reproduce - throwing all of this into Phabricator isn't a big deal. Elitre (WMF) (talk) 18:16, 13 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Stumbled on that myself, so there we go. Elitre (WMF) (talk) 19:18, 14 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion: Add keyboard accelerators

[edit]

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

Issue

It is impossible to access certain menus / toolbars / buttons without the mouse.

Proposed solution

Add a key to trigger a keyboard accelerator (see https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms646337(v=vs.85).aspx for full description)

When the user presses the key (e.g. ALT) the relevant menu or button gets an underline to denote the trigger for it, e.g. to access page settings one could press ALT + P.

Add a general key shortcut to access the menu, typically on several operating systems this is keyboard key F10, for most (all ?) applications in it.

Note that this is distinct from the "normal" keyboard shortcuts. Accelerators tend to be context dependent and can trigger in any dialog or interface that has options or buttons. 197.218.84.212 (talk) 14:03, 16 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Selection buffer "pastings" are rich text and mess up syntax colouring

[edit]

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

Recently I selected the title of a Wikipedia article to selection-buffer-"paste" it into a link on a separate talk page using mouse button 3 (middle-click). However the h1-style formatting was also "pasted", and from then on it was like the editor had two layers, the syntax-coloured text including the header-formatted title, and plain text behind. They even scrolled separately and it could not be fixed until the page was reloaded (my work was lost). It seems VE uses `contenteditable`, which needs additional code to behave so that it ignores formatting (anyone who wishes can test this fact by making an opening a bookmark with URL data:text/html,<html contenteditable>). Arlo Barnes (talk) 01:51, 28 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Selecting an article title in the visual editor/2017 wikitext editor though isn't possible ATM. And which talk page would that be, are you editing it with the 2017 wikitext editor? Would you mind describing the issue again by listing the steps to reproduce and examples? TYVM! Elitre (WMF) (talk) 11:06, 2 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Arlo, were you in the visual mode when this happened? Did you have syntax highlighting enabled? And is it still happening? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 23:29, 27 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
