User talk:Skizzerz/Namespaces

From mediawiki.org

There are a number of people very much looking forward to optional Namespace Manager capability being added to the upcoming 1.16 Mediawiki release - wiki page groupings tend to grow in leaps and bounds and there is a stated need to be able to separate by searchable namespace while still be within the same 'wiki'. Skizzerz, your work on this is very much appreciated - anything that can be done to expedite delivery of this option in the next release will significantly help a lot of users out there in locating information more easily. 1.17 for Namespaces initial rollout![edit]

Go Skizzerz!! Those of us who use MediaWiki in the business and departmental world are excited about this functionality coming into play - we're all really hoping on 1.17 for a real target date for the namespace rollout. In-wiki custom namespaces rather than only using categories to separate different user group information and having to wade through too many unrelated search results is getting to be more than tiresome for the users on our wiki. Keep up hard the hard work and thank you!

Experimental special page in 1.17?[edit]

Is the experimental Special page part of 1.17 as indicated? Superman57 21:19, 15 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Namespace Display, Purpose and Type?[edit]

A few more requests from the corporate world:

  • Could you please include in the schema some kind of free-form text field in which we can place a human-oriented description of the *purpose* of each namespace?
  • Could this new tool include a non-privileged, display-only mode, which would list the existing namesakes and their characteristics? We have dozens of custom namespaces on our departmental wiki, with that list growing over time, and we need a way to maintain user documentation on what the list of available namespaces is and what kind of information should go in each one. (This is even more useful given the addition of a "purpose" field from the prior bullet
  • Could you add another field to the schema (or generalize one of the existing fields) to provide a user-oriented "type" or "namespace category"? I'm thinking of a short text token kind of value. For example, in my wiki, we have some namespaces for each functional role in our organization (tech support, project management, operations, ...), whilst we have a (large) number of other namespaces based on project. Then there are the "system" namespaces, and (potentially) extension-based namespaces, etc. This namespace type could then be used to partition or sort the list of available namespaces.
