Translations of zh pages[edit]

Hi Shinjiman, I notice you are translating the main page into various Chinese dialects. I thought you'd better know that so far Chinese pages have been under a generic 'zh' tag, e.g. Documentation/zh. I have no idea how similar the dialects are or whether it is better to have a single 'zh' or separate zh-hans, zh-hant, etc. I thought you'd better be informed about the current state so you can decide which approach would be better. Also bear in mind that all these pages will need to be kept up to date, so more languages = more work. Also, if we decide to have separate dialects for one part of the site, we should do so for the whole site, so the existing 'zh' pages will need to be moved, copied and re-translated. Thanks. --HappyDog 06:24, 12 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

okay, as of the current stage of the zh variants, I will translate them later (make the page to point them to zh pages first), it's just the beginning of the translation process. :-) --Shinjiman 06:26, 12 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
OK.
Also, according to meta:List of Wikipedias the correct code for Cantonese is 'zh-yue'. They also list two other chinese dialects aside from 'zh': 'zh-min-nan' and 'zh-classical', which I am assuming correspond to the two names you have used. All languages should use the appropriate code from that list, so those pages will need moving and the language template updating. If they do not correspond then they should not be included here, as we only allow languages for which a Wikipedia exists. --HappyDog 06:34, 12 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Please see the MediaZilla:8217, the zh-yue/zh-min-nan are not in the classification of ISO639 nor RFC 4646, they are the combined code only. The correct code of Cantonese should be "yue" and Min-nan should be "nan", which they are specified at ISO639-3. The code cannot shown in the localised name due to lacking information set in the Names.php. --Shinjiman 06:42, 12 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
OK, but this is the site for the MediaWiki software, so we need to be consistent with the way the MediaWiki software names languages. Please use the codes as they will be in a week's time, i.e. the new codes if the change is definitely going ahead, but if there is any doubt, or the process is going to take a while, please use the existing codes. We can move the pages if and when any changes make it into the software. By 'in use', I mean it is the official address of the associated Wikipedia, and the correct language name shows up when the {{#language}} parser function is used. Here is the current state of all the language codes that have been mentioned so far. --HappyDog 06:59, 12 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Code {{#language: code}}
nan Bân-lâm-gú
yue 粵語
zh 中文
zh-classical 文言
zh-hans 中文(简体)
zh-hant 中文(繁體)
zh-min-nan Bân-lâm-gú
zh-yue 粵語
As the specifications from RFC 4646, I think the Names.php file needs to be updated. Because the parser function #language is use the localised name which is depends on the Names.php file. Should I make a bug request at the Bugzilla? :) --Shinjiman 07:03, 12 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Can you tell me which, of the above languages codes refer to which language/dialect. I am currently unclear as to which ones are duplicates and which ones are different. --HappyDog 07:06, 12 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
I have submitted the patch to MediaZilla:8599. There's having the information what you're asking. Seems there's also some incorrect localised names in the Names.php. --Shinjiman 07:21, 12 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Code {{#language: code}} Name and Comments
nan Bân-lâm-gú Min-nan
yue 粵語 Cantonese
zh 中文 Chinese, yes, it's the generic Chinese language
zh-classical 文言 Classical Chinese (combined with och/ltc (Old Chinese and Late Time Chinese if I remembered correctly, also och/ltc are the language codes specified in ISO639-3).)
zh-hans 中文(简体) Chinese, writen in Simplified variant
zh-hant 中文(繁體) Chiense, writen in Traditional variant
zh-min-nan Bân-lâm-gú Min-nan (seems this code is incorrect, the correct code should be nan, which is in ISO639-3.)
zh-yue 粵語 Cantonese (seems this code is incorrect, the correct code should be yue, which is in ISO639-3.)

See also the IANA language subtag registry.--Shinjiman 08:03, 12 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Update: The yue, zh-hans and zh-hant have been added in svn:21200 and svn:21201 by Raymond, the codes that added will be going live in these few days, which is after the database update in the WMF servers. --Shinjiman 16:10, 12 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

It appears that this is all now fixed (the translated names seem to be showing up as expected in the tables above). Thanks for your work on clearing this up. --HappyDog 14:35, 22 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Template:MediaWiki News/yue update[edit]

Please update Template:MediaWiki News/yue. Thanks. --Kaganer 01:34, 8 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Done. Shinjiman 06:22, 8 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Also may be useful do translate headers "Recent news" and "Older news" (with small text), and create page News/yue (instead redirect to /zh) - for link from main page. --Kaganer 06:29, 8 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Done as well. Shinjiman 06:38, 8 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Cool ;) Also thanks for /zh improve... --Kaganer 13:53, 8 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Communication/yue[edit]

Hi! Need your help for migration of Communication/yue into new translation system. I've imported old translations into new version of Communication/yue and appeal to you to check and finish it. Maybe you also translate of How to contribute? Thanks in advance! --Kaganer (talk) 18:14, 4 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Is there a way to get hold of MediaWiki 1.1?[edit]

I only see that https://releases.wikimedia.org/mediawiki/ goes back to 1.3. Thanks, Setian~mw (talk) 23:35, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
