Dear RobertL, Welcome to!

Yes, Welcome! This site is dedicated to the documentation of the MediaWiki software, the software behind many wikis, including that of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation projects.
Please, take a look at the following pages. They might prove useful to you as a newcomer here:

If you have any questions, please ask me on my talk page. Once again, welcome, and I hope you quickly feel comfortable here, and find this site a beneficial documentation of the MediaWiki software.

In the betawiki newsletter, there is written that you were working on a Babel-Extension for MediaWiki. Good thing. I've been contemplating the same. I've discussed this, and some related ideas, with User:GerardM about a year ago. In the Wikipedia of the Ripuarian languages, I've collected all Babel related texts I could find in several dozens of wikis for about 270 language codes, see this directory, see this explanaton of the scheme, and the sample page for English. Vary the code at the end of the URLs, so as to inspect others.

  • I'd like to suggest to offer additional Zxxx (script codes as of ISO 15924) for those languages having more than one script used, e. g. Khasakh, Kurdi, etc.
  • I'd like to likewise suggest offering additional orthography indicators for those (Macro)languages having more than one generally used system of orthography, which we have already for nds, zh, e. g.

If you want to discuss, or if you'd like assistance of any kind, feel free to address me. If I can help, I shall help. Greetings. --Purodha Blissenbach 01:22, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

I looked over your Babel related texts, but I can't seam to work out how they are organised; in any case I'd rather leave that to the translation team. Regarding the additional Zxxx codes, from looking here they appear to be out of scope for this extension (as it is primarily aimed at languages, rather than other skills) -- perhaps some of the other scripts might have a place, however if no one is going to benefit from it I see little point in coding such functionality. Howver, I'd be more than happy to look into orthography indicators, although some research on my part may be required; can you provide a link to orthography lists? Thank you. Slovene missing[edit]

I see Slovene (slovenščina) has not been included in the internationalisation file. Why's that? I suggest translations from the English Wikipedia are used for Slovene. --Eleassar 08:54, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Not all languages have been translated yet, when it is it will be added. I do not want to handle getting already existing messages from other wikis as there may be copyright implications, I do not have the time, and it would be better for a translator to double check. You are, of course, free to translate it yourself. MinuteElectron 14:51, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Question abuot Liquid Threads[edit]

Hi - I get the impression from the Liquid Threads talk page that you are in some way involved with its development. I wonder if you could help with this question that I've posted on that talk page. - 11:00, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

I did a quick clean up, although the Wikimedia Foundation have hired a contractor to do work on this so I will not be contributing any further. MinuteElectron 14:03, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Skin Mibbit Chat[edit]

I have installed the Mibbit extention good. Now i wanted to edit the skin, so i registered myself on and edited it on the page preferences. Then you get your new id code. What do i have to do that? Because he saves the colors, but i dont see them in my chat. Do i have to add the id somewhere in an file? And where? Can you please tell me how.

Many thanks, --Cobra 20:19, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

I believe you need to set the following in LocalSettings.php:

$wgMibbitExtraParameters = array( 'settings' => 'your id code goes here' );

-0 in the Babel extension[edit]

Can you please remove the -0 (zero) "stage" from the extension.

The -0 stage has been deprecated on wp:en. (For good reason.) Consider how many languages that you don't know. Such categories would be large and useless for anything. And such transclusion a waste of resources. - Jc37 23:55, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

  • Seconded. The -0 level is useless. VegaDark 02:16, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
    • I also agree. Let's not make that can of worms institutionalized across all projects. Horologium 10:04, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
This can be disabled via configuration variable, I can imagine many uses for the -0 stage, however. Imagine a user who could not speak French on the French Wikipedia - under such circumstances it might be useful to indicate this. MinuteElectron 06:41, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
I don't dismiss with that usage, but that is the only usage that's ever been found to be even remotely helpful.
How about this: -0 only works for the default language of the project in question? - Jc37 08:00, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
This feature can be disabled if desired. I don't think it is a worthwhile use of my time to develop this functionality. Someone else is free to if they want. MinuteElectron 17:01, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
  1. There are uses for -0 level other than the project language, e.g. in an ancient greek wiki you may want to tell that you neither understand ancient, nor modern greek; in any Nowegian wiki, you may want to indicate that you do not understand either of the three varieties of the language listed in the ISO 639-1; in wikis of languages living under umbrella languages, like lb, you may want to tell that you communicate neither in de, nor in fr, in addition to not in lb etc.
  2. There is no need to disable specific zxx-0 variants. Do not use them, as you may likely not use many other language-level combinations that you have no capable users of. --Purodha Blissenbach 15:56, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
And in those unique situations, you can (wait for it) use a userbox/babelbox.
But consider how many languages there are. So every project would have (Number of languages minus 1 or 2) garbage categories and transclusions. All that for 1 or 2 exceptions to the general rule.
As several have noted above, this is a bad idea. I guess I'm just surprised you don't see it. - Jc37 04:55, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

How to get captions working with your click extension?[edit]

Hello trying to get captions working for your Click extension and it does not seem to be working. Any advice you can offer?

As an example you can look at this page : — Preceding unsigned comment added by (talkcontribs)

Caption refers to the text you see when hovering over it - seems to appear fine for me. MinuteElectron 10:05, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Ok thanks I see. I was hoping it could add text under the image. — Preceding unsigned comment added by (talkcontribs)

Sorry, that is not currently possible- you could use custom tables or css though. MinuteElectron 10:32, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Signature help for my wiki[edit]

On an old wiki site I used to run, there was a user who's signature was "FUCK HEIL HITLER!" and we had to manually re-edit the signatures right across the wiki I don't know what the SQL is to manually replace every signature in the old page histories so it displays as [[User:Username|Username]]. --Sunstar NW XP 12:28, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Uniwiki extensions[edit]

Hey, I would like to help out with any testing you are doing for the Uniwiki extensions. If you'd like help, of course. Please let me know if there's anything I can do. Best regards, Marjon 10:59, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Feel free to do testing if you want to, I am using a special testing environment and just methodically processing the list of extensions I need to test, then creating a list of issues and a compatibility chart for each - hence I can just skip any of the ones that you do before I get to them. I think you are aware that I am receiving funding to do this, so perhaps your time would be better spent developing - but don't let me put you off if this is what you are interested in! (I will be ramping up the pace now I am familiar with the testing environment so the rest of the Uniwiki extension should get processed quite promptly) MinuteElectron 16:08, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Uniwiki Extention[edit]

Hi ! i saw that you had this problem :

" The edit button on existing pages in the main namespace causes a redirect loop to happen when pressed."

I have the same problem with the uniwiki extension, did you solve it ?

there is also some wiki that i have contacted and didnt had this bug :

Best. E. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Monsieur Martin (talkcontribs)

Not at this moment, I currently do not have the free time (or indeed funding) required to go in to depth regarding such issues. There is a developer being paid to work on these extensions so I suggest you speak to him her about it. MinuteElectron 13:37, 26 December 2008 (UTC)
Thx for your answer, do you have the mail or the pseudo of this developer ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Monsieur Martin (talkcontribs)
