Dear Leaderboard, Welcome to MediaWiki.org!

Yes, welcome! This site is dedicated to documenting the MediaWiki software, the software behind many wikis, including that of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation projects.

Marking user pages for deletion[edit]

Hello, thank you for marking user pages for deletion when required. I'd appreciate it, however, if you marked the actual pages for deletion. In these cases, editing another users' user page is acceptable. Using the deletion template on a flow-enabled user talk page is more difficult to track, which causes some deletion notices to fly under the radar. —Mainframe98 talk 09:16, 12 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Mainframe98: I want to edit the userpage, but I can't; the abusefilter blocks me from doing so. Hence I'm forced to edit the talkpage. Leaderboard (talk) 09:36, 12 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
I forgot that we have a new filter that prevents that... I've promoted you to autopatroller, so now you can. —Mainframe98 talk 09:38, 12 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Congratulations![edit]

Congratulations on becoming a sysop here!

I noticed that the pages you've deleted still contain the contents of the deleted pages. If you wish to have those automatically removed, you can enable the "Clean Delete Reasons" gadget to do that, on Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. It appears that most (if not all of the currently active) sysops have that enabled. —Mainframe98 talk 18:03, 16 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Your activity on my User page[edit]

Hello Leaderboard,

it seems you deleted my user page on November 16th. It would be nice to leave any comment behind why this happended. How I could get this content that used to be on this page? Could you please explain?

Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Indolderivat (talk • contribs)

Hi @Indolderivat: , I deleted your userpage because you had blanked it after adding what appeared to be test content, hence giving the impression that you were done with your testing. I can restore the content to your sandbox, would that be fine? Leaderboard (talk) 09:53, 7 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
That would be great. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Indolderivat (talk • contribs)
Yes Done at User:Indolderivat/sandbox. Leaderboard (talk) 21:19, 7 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Weighing in on Growth team work[edit]

Hi Leaderboard -- thank you for weighing in when the Growth team was discussing ideas on what we would build. We've made a lot of progress in the last few months, and we're hoping you could take a look at some of our current work and post any thoughts you have. We're working on a "help panel" (comments can go here), and on the next steps for the "Personalized first day" project (comments can go here). Thank you for any time you can give! -- MMiller (WMF) (talk) 22:09, 7 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Your IRC request[edit]

Maybe, is there some context for what you asked? Legoktm (talk) 06:17, 9 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Legnktm: It was related to massive attacks occurring here with disgruntled en.wp users against Graham87 and some others. All he was able to do was to hide those posts, which some of them would unhide again. I think he should have the ability to delete some of those posts himself (as they are that offensive). At this time, the whole /32 range is global-blocked for a few hours, and one of the admins here said that (s)he would block it (2607:FB90:0:0:0:0:0:0/32) for longer locally. The core talk page of the abused is also semi-protected at this time. Leaderboard (talk) 10:21, 9 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Deleted user page[edit]

Are user pages deleted on this wiki. I only created my local description on this wiki and you appeared to have deleted it. Can you explain what I did wrong. Warm regards, Mahveotm (talk) 02:37, 16 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Mahveotm: Your content appeared to be that of a test page, which is something that we get a lot here at MediaWiki. While I can restore the content back, I should note that MediaWiki is bow displaying the contents of your at Meta-Wiki, which is the same that I deleted. Please let me know if you want me to restore your MediaWiki userpage. Thanks. Leaderboard (talk) 10:41, 16 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Userpage deletions[edit]

Hey Leaderboard, I'm curious about this user page deletion. I'm unaware of any MW policies which would prohibit an individual from creating their own user page as either a test or with a single word. It doesn't appear directly out of scope nor is it spam. Praxidicae (talk) 14:14, 24 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Praxidicae: I've seen many cases wherein users randomly post some gibberish on their user page (hence why I marked it as a test page). Leaderboard (talk) 14:16, 24 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
That wasn't random gibberish, it was the word accountant in Indonesian. I'm not sure we should be deleting userpages unless it violates a standard or policy like spam, scope or blatant vandalism... Praxidicae (talk) 14:21, 24 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Praxidicae: Maybe, but that's the content that should be in a sandbox. Anyway, I've restored the page at this time. Leaderboard (talk) 14:25, 24 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
How so? Userpages are for users to put information about themselves which could include explaining their job title... Praxidicae (talk) 14:29, 24 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Praxidicae: I would expect a userpage to contain more than one word. Randomly putting a word in a page - even if it's a userpage - does not make sense. Leaderboard (talk) 14:34, 24 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

special:abusefilter/87[edit]

Are you sure about ... !page_title irlike 'Extension' & !page_title irlike 'Project' ... rather than using page_prefixedtitle. (Noting that I updated these from article_text). Also this double ... & !term1 & !term2 & ... doesn't seem right either &! (term1 |term2) ??? — billinghurst sDrewth 09:04, 13 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Billinghurst: Thanks for making those fixes - but is there a benefit to using prefixedtitle rather than page_title? Also, I thought that &(!A & !B) = &!(A | B) (which can be showed by one use of De Morgan's law) - is that something I'm missing? Leaderboard (talk) 09:08, 13 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
If you are aiming at namespaces in your filter, you won't see the namespaces names in page_title Special:AbuseFilter/examine/log/267902. If that is not your aim, then maybe some explanatory/overt notes. As the previous filter was aimed at the boards, when it is moved out to a larger space clarity is useful to your colleagues. — billinghurst sDrewth 11:13, 13 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Billinghurst: Namespaces was indeed my aim, and hence I'll update the filter to explicitly target namespaces in some time. Leaderboard (talk) 11:26, 13 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)
