Thanks for the interest[edit]

Thanks for your interest in our project idea. We have put together some notes in the IdeaLab that give our current thinking on the general direction that the project is likely to take.

We have had several potential applicants express interest in the review application as a possible GSOC project. As mentors we will ultimately need to select only a single applicant to back in their proposal. To help us evaluate your technical skills I'd like you to fix an annoying little bug in MediaWiki or a related project:

Here's your workflow:

  1. Go to Annoying little bugs
  2. Pick an annoying little bug to fix.
  3. Follow the instructions on the page, and fix the bug!

These bugs are specifically chosen to not be so difficult to fix, so hopefully they should be within your abilities. Also don't forget to submit patch sets for them in gerrit and interact with the community on email, bugzilla and irc. Think of this part as a job interview. We really want to find a candidate who will thrive in our environment and help us bring the the project idea to production use.

If you are looking for ways to make yourself stand out from the crowd, start doing some basic research on what tools are available in the FOSS ecosystem that might be able to fulfill our primary user stories as given on the IdeaLab page. Put your initial thoughts on this down in your proposal. You could also try to looking at the Wikimania Scholarships app and give your ideas about how that codebase could be leveraged and extended to fulfill the primary user stories. There are instructions on the wiki about how to install and run the Scholarships app using MediaWiki-Vagrant.

I would also highly recommend reading the chat log from the irc meeting that the Engineering Community Team held recently. Sumana, Quim and Andre answered many questions that you may have as well and gave links to some great reading on putting together a successful proposal and working in open source communities.

If you have additional questions or concerns, I'd recommend asking on irc or the wikitech-l mailing list. One thing I've learned in the short time that I've been at the Wikimedia Foundation is that there are a lot of smart, caring people in our community and they will take the time to give answers and advice when you ask good questions.

Hi Bryan Thank you for your comment. I have almost finished my proposal. It would be completed today before the deadline. And thanks for helping me with the bug. I would be grateful if you could mark Wish to Mentor on Google-melange for my proposal. Also if possible if you could give some feedback and suggestions on the proposal.
